RIGA | Projects & Construction

Economical boom (+12% GDP) in Latvia, increase of salaries (+20% over the last 12 months) and other impressive numbers show that this country in full speed goes ahead to become normal, highly-developed European economy.

Riga City has its own plans - to become Northern European metropolis, a hub of East-West economical and political relations. This still seems to be far away goal, but we are going to reach it.

Enormous historical centre and nice historical suburbs lay huge requirements on developers of new architecture here. There should be provided bright, individualistic contemporary architecture without fake historical features. Here below you would see the proposed skyscrapers (more than 200 highrises are proposed but of course - not all will be built) and some other important buildings to come to Riga in nearest future.

Very conservative rendering of business centre - there for sure will be more highrises than shown here:

Business district on the left bank of Daugava (future) and Old City on the right bank (today)

Announced projects of the business district.

1. Symbiotic tower (in forefront) by Guther Schaller, apartments, 24 floors. In the background you see existing buildings. Design under elaboration

2. Z-towers nearby - 30 and 25 floors high, united with restaurant. Architect - Uldis Luksevics. Construction on-going

3. New multifunctional complex among Soviet time commieblocks, the highest building - 40 floors. Local architects "Z4". Approval procedure on-going.

4. "Solaris" apartments in Soviet commieblock environment (architect - Silis, Zabers Klava). Two 25-floorers in the background are built, third - 30-floorer is approved recently.

5. First stage of highrise district on Lucavsala island - multifunctional quartal, some buildings exceed 30 floors. Finnish "CEJ architects" - currently individual design for separate highrises ongoing, construction site under preparation.

6. Group of office buildings at Skanstes Street, under design, up to 18 floors

7. 24-floor apartment building, architect - "Arhis". Preliminary approvals, construction to be started in 2007.

8. Hanzas dārzs - draft proposal for new multifunctional quartal by "Silis, Zabers & Klava" north from Centre

9. Mezaparks Plaza - complex of three 24-floor buildings north from centre. Approved, construction should start this autumn.

10. Apartment highrises east from Centrum, "MGarhitekti". Approved.

11. Four 24-floor apartment buildings, boring Finnish design (sorry, there is also good Finnish design!). Under construction.

12. Initial proposal for Zakusala island development by Norwegian Space Group. Now they are elaborating something more tasty, I hope.

13. New quartal east from Centre, approved. Four 17-floor buildings. Just approved.

14. New quartal (Dienvidu Metropole) at Southern bridge - 7 highrise buildings up to 17 floors. Just approved

15. Kliversala development area - designer - Ventis Didrihsons. Up to 24 floors, new channels and dense perimetral quartals in fake Amsterdam style. Detailed design on-going.

16. "Da Vinci" - 27 floors, construction on-going.

17. Multifunctional district on Zvirgzdusala peninsula - desgin on-going. Up to 24 floors.

18. New multifunctional district ar Riga airport - just a draft, each building would be designed individually. Up to 24 floors.

19. "Panorama Plaza" - two 32 floorers and two 27-floorers. One 27-fl built, one 32-fl building halfway. Almost none is happy with design here, its outdated

---
New lowrises in historical "Art Nouveau" centre:
a. Tango projekts, local architects, under realisation

b. Valdemara parks - new quartal among historical quartals, architect - Gunther Schaller. Design on-going

c. Apartments Aizkulises - "Silis, Zabers & Klava[/B] - in "red district" of city.

---
Other projects
I. Museum of Contemporary art in abandoned industrial area (ambitious New Riga project there is elaborated by Rem Koolhaas), architect of museum - Rem Koolhaas.

II. Midrise offices (up to 14 floors) at Skanstes Street, construction site under preparation

III. Extension of Riga airport, which experiences explosive growth (50 - 90% passenger turnover increase every year). Construction to be started in autumn next year.

IV. "Riga Plaza" supermarket and entertainment centre. Construction just started. Architekt - "Arhis".

V. Sales office for large multifunctional building (I can not reveal its architecture yet - but it is highly original too). Architekt - "Sarma&Norde"

VI. Southern bridge across Daugava river - construction on-going. Design - "Arhitektonika". On both banks of river there are approved highrise complexes.

VII. Luxury apartments in Jurmala suburb - "Edene"

I am looking forward to this project. Thanks for keeping us posted.

I like the general style of construction in these projects. It is very modern, glassy and has influence from De Stijl. Hope more countries built like this.

It seems very clearly that your politicians don't know the words "conformism", "lagom", "jante law" or "NIMBY". Btw, ours do.

Congratulations fellow Latvians!!!!

Future leaders of Northern Europe- go visit such cities as Riga and Copenhagen/Malmö!!!!

Incredible! Nice to see so much ongoing & planned construction going on in Riga...it sure makes me happier than any new project in Dubai, Singapore or China could

By the way, what has happened with what was probably the first "Riga project" i have seen on these forums, and that is the new national library?
Any updates?

@Similos - National library will be built as seen on this picture.

Last week they removed some buildings on the construction place, area is fenced. But we expect that real construction will start only at the second half of the next year.
Here you can look at gallery of our planned Concert Hall - public discussion on-going now. Archit4ect - "Silis, Zabers & Klava". Great architecture IMHO.

Very nice projects for Riga, unbelievebale!!! Some of these projects look very beautiful, but Jurmala is so nice with its old houses and some others comtemporaries, that I think it's not a good idea to build apartment buildings there.

Thanks for appreciation Regarding Jurmala - you can't avoid having luxury apartment houses there - there are Russian billions pressing on local authorities... This city/town is becoming popular again among Russian elite.

Proposal for the new Mezaparks district - this proposal did not win but some ideas might be used:

New quartal south from Old City:

Zvirgzdusala peninsula complex - some 2 years old project, don't know what's happening with it now:
