Iran to receive Tupolev Tu-204SM planes

Iran to receive Tupolev Tu-204SM planes
PRESS TV | April 27, 2011
A senior Russian aviation official says Iranian carriers are taking interest in Tupolev's new Tu-204SM twin-jet passenger aircraft and are among the potential customers of the plane. Vice President of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Alexander Tulyakov told reporters on Monday that Iranian airliners have raised the total purchase order for the Tupolev Tu-204SM jets to 20, Mehr news agency reported Tuesday.

The remarks come as Russia was expected to deliver only five Tupolev Tu-204 SM passenger aircraft to Iran under an agreement signed between Russian Ilyushin Finance Company (IFC) and Iran Airtour Airline in 2009. However, Pratt & Whitney -- an American aircraft engine manufacturer and a major shareholder of Russia's Perm Engine Company -- informed Iran Airtour Airline a year later that the delivery of five Tupolev TU-204SM jetliners equipped with PS-90A2 engines are impossible due to Washington's unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

According to UAC officials, Russia will deliver Tupolev TU-204SM airliners equipped with PS-90A engines to Iran. It seems that Americans have had no role in the development of PS-90A engines. The Tupolev Tu-204SM, a significant upgrade of Tupolev Tu-204, is a twin-engine medium range Russian airliner capable of carrying 210 passengers.

The aircraft is equipped with the latest navigation and radio communication equipment, as well as state-of-the-art hardware. It is controlled by two pilots instead of three crew members required to navigate the basic Tu-204 version. The Tupolev Tu-204SM performed its maiden flight from Russia's Ulyanovsk Vostochny Airport on December 29, 2010.

Iran plans to purchase the Russian-built passenger aircraft to renovate its aviation fleet.

An Iranian aviation official has denied claims by a Russian corporation that Iranian carriers have requested to purchase Tupolev's new Tu-204SM twin-jet passenger aircraft.

“We have so far received no requests from Iranian carriers regarding the utilization of this type of passenger aircraft, and the issue of Iran's request to purchase the plane is not true,” says Iran's Civil Aviation Organization's Deputy Head for Flight Standards Hossein Habibi Ahzoon, IRNA reported Sunday.

On Tuesday, a senior Russian aviation official said Iranian carriers are taking interest in Tupolev's new Tu-204SM twin-jet passenger aircraft and are among the potential customers of the plane.

Vice President of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Alexander Tulyakov said Monday that Iranian airliners have raised the total purchase order for the Tupolev Tu-204SM jets to 20.

The Iranian aviation official further said that Iran's Civil Aviation Organization considers the technical record of every plane before issuing authorization for the plane to enter Iran's aviation fleet.

He stressed that the security of the aircraft is the most significant index of evaluating the planes.

The technical facilities of the planes are other elements considered in evaluating aircrafts before they enter Iran's aviation fleet, he said.

Habibi Ahzoon pointed out that Tupolev's new Tu-204SM twin-jet passenger aircraft has been criticized by Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev.

Ahzoon's comment about remarks by Medvedev is inaccurate as Medevedev did not refer to the Tu204 but rather that the Russian aviation industry in general was failing to produce competitive enough aircraft on fuel consumption and engine noise in particular. This has nothing to do with the safety of the Tu204 (an aircraft with an unblemished record).

Well, I think They didn't expect the Russian counterparts to announce the deal. probably they prefer to hide the deal as long as they can in fear of US exerting pressure on Russia to cancel the deal and probably they wanted to announce it when the deal was on the verge of taking place. No one sells air planes to Iran because of US sanctions, so even if Tupolev wanted to do so, they should welcome it. lol. (I'm almost sure that they are playing a role)

Iran fleet hits the crash barrier

Iran fleet hits the crash barrier
Arabian Aerospace | May 09, 2011

Affected by a generation of sanctions imposed by the United States that has prevented the sale of US airliners – and many European models – to Iran, its situation has been worsened in recent months by UN-mandated sanctions against Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. These have made it difficult for Iranian aircraft to refuel in several European nations.

The poor condition of the Iranian aviation industry is reflected in its accident rate. Over the past decade, Iran has suffered one of the world’s worst aviation records for crashes. Almost 20 military and civil transport aircraft have met with fatal accidents and the country’s civil air fleet is increasingly elderly and difficult to maintain.

It is a sad fall for a country whose national airline in the late 1970s was the world’s fastest-growing and was a customer for the Anglo-French supersonic Concorde. Indeed, the Iran Air offices in London’s Piccadilly still have a Concorde model in the company’s colours in the window, a poignant reminder of faded ambitions.
