Atlanta To Get New Tallest

The Atlanta BusinessChronicle 10/8/06

Atlanta-based architect John Portman plans to build the cities new tallest

The long time architect for the city of Atlanta’s premiere skyscrapers has announced that he is in the early stages of designing the cities new tallest building. The news came unexpectedly during an annual meeting with his company, John Portman and Associates. He stated, “By early next year the city of Atlanta and the country as a whole will be looking at an amazing rendering of the cities new tallest.” He also stated that the new skyscraper would be located in Midtown Atlanta, and will be called, “The Midtown Mecca”. He quoted, “ This magnificent building will be the first thing you see, while entering the city from the north.” He also stated that the new skyscraper would more than likely be a mixed-use building inhabited with condos, office space, and retail. Portman stated that he was still in the early to mid stages of designing, but did state that the building could be as tall as 1250’ feet tall, making it more than 100 feet taller than the cities current tallest, and as tall as the Empire State Building located in New York. He commented saying, “ I want this project to carry a huge statement for the city of Atlanta, showing the country that we are still the unofficial capital of the South.” He also commented that the building would probably contain about 70 floors and have a parking deck capacity of about 2,000 parking spaces. The building is to be located on a vacant parking lot on Peachtree Street, in the Arts District. The building is to be completed by 2010.

Atkanta to get New Tallest

I hate to say this, but this announcement is a little premature. No renderings and an unofficial announcement. I will believe this when I see it. Believe me, I live in Cleveland, but love the Atlanta skyline, and I would love to see a new tallest there, but I could have waited for an announcement until we had renderings and an official announcment, But if it is true, The I am looking foward to seeing and hereing more.

This is great news for Atlanta! I'm also proud for Nashville and the Signature Tower, which IMO is the catalyst for this project. I always felt, and certainly hoped that having a smaller city like Nashville build a supertall scraper would pave the way for a supertall building boom in America. It looks like my hopes have been answered.

With the housing market hitting a large slump, and seemingly construction of new buildings is beginning to slow, this is a very interesting time to propose a "new tallest". But hey, lets hope it gets built!

This article is a Fraud. This was bothering me all day so I to the Atlanta Business Chronicle's site to check it out. The only article involving Portman in the last thirty days is about a makeover for the Hyatt. Will a moderator please close this thread before anyone else gets there hopes up.

YESSS!!

My Atlanta will have a building taller than 312m, 1023 feet tall. I'm thinking this one will be taller than about 320 meters. We'll still be the tallest building outside of New York City and Chicago, now that Signatur Tower was supposed to beat us.

Any design on the new tallest? I like Atlanta skyscrapers and the current tallest is already impressive!
