I think it's better to not limit this to Bangkok, KL and SG. How about including Manila and Jakarta as well

Change In Concept Will Put Plaza Rakyat Development In Fast Track

Federal Territory Minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- A change from the "build, mortgage and ownership transfer" concept to directly selling Plaza Rakyat will bring faster progress to the delayed project, said Federal Territory Minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique.

The suggestion for change was put forward by the developer, Plaza Rakyat Sdn Bhd, to the ministry following its inability to cope up with the project using the original concept, he said.

"We find that the (new) concept would be able to help push the project, but the developer has to fulfil several conditions set by the ministry," he said in response to a question from Datuk Dr Lee Chong Meng at the Dewan Negara sitting here Monday.

The ministry, however, has yet to receive any feedback from the developer, he said.

Zulhasnan said that among the conditions the developer of Plaza Rakyat would have to meet include the immediate settlement of loans amounting to RM60 million taken from the RHB Bank.

The developer would also have to get a release on the bank mortgage on the land which has been put up as collateral for the loans, as well as settle all debts with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) arising from accumulated rental payments on the mortgaged land and assessment dues amounting to RM15.4 million.

Work on the Plaza Rakyat project, planned as an integrated public transportation centre, started in 1992 but it came to a standstill when the developer started facing financial problems following the economic downturn in 1997.

The ministry then took the initiative to resuscitate the project in view of it being a privatised project between DBKL and Plaza Rakyat Sdn Bhd. The developer had been given till May 2007 to complete the project.

Hey, I've always wanted to know, what is that shorter existing building to the right of Petronas? Is that part of the KLCC complex or a totally separate building?

That would be Menara Maxis, owned by one of the telco companies. Not part of KLCC, but is connected to it.

SEA construction starts to top US$100 bn in 2007 (23 November 2006)

Abstract: US$106 billion in construction starts are being planned for Southeast Asia in 2007, according to the latest research from BCI Asia.

More than US$100 billion worth of construction starts are planned for Southeast Asia in 2007, according to statistics drawn from BCI Asia?s databases yesterday.

From data collected in interviews with more than 100,000 architects and other construction professionals across the region, US$106 billion worth of building and construction projects are planned to get underway next year.

For the first time in BCI Asia research history, the value of planned projects for a subsequent year in Vietnam (US$32 billion in 2007) has topped Indonesia (US$25 billion). In Malaysia US$19 billion worth of projects are scheduled to start construction next year, followed by the Philippines and Singapore both with US$11 billion and followed by Thailand with US$8 billion.

Across the region there has been a surge in planning activity for utilities and infrastructure as well as industrial facilities. In the building sector, there has been an increase in design activity for transport-related buildings as well as hotels, resorts and serviced apartments; as governments and developers across the region gear up for rising trade and tourism.
