haha, never noticed that before. But the building's over a decade old, and also I think all similarities to the Freedom Tower design are purely coincidential.

The central government is now encouraging Tianjin's development to divert the heavy burden of Beijing I think. This can be seen from the fact that they built the Beijing--Tianjin high speed rail first in the country, partly because the Shanghai--Hangzhou maglev met with local oppositions from Shanghai. Beijing and Tianjin are supposed to be connected (30 minutes now by high speed rail), just as Shanghai and Hangzhou are. While Beijing and Shanghai are now busy constructing subways, the second tie cities are constructing massive buildings, as Shanghai did a decade ago.

Tianjin has very high development potential as well as a lot of delayed development. For decade city that is officially China's third most important had been lagging way behind other major cities. Yet 5 years ago that gap was striking. Arriving from BJ to Tianjin was like coming to a different country. Following purges in the local government and decision by central to jump start development had seen some impressive result, although still Tianjin is noticeably behind not only Beijing and Shanghai, but also Hangzhou. But as I've said it has been rising through the ranks and now it's position as in very top tire of Chinese cities is rather secure.
There is a lot here (on the forum) about development of Chongqing, and it is, don't get me wrong , very-very impressive metropolis but its overall development particularly human capital lags way behind that of Tianjin.
So, I would say Tianjin has a bright future.

That said Tianjin had always had those bright possibilities that not always had been realized. And it even has a monument for this failures - unfinished skyscraper on Nanjing road skeleton of which was wrapped in a colorful plastic for the Olympics (that were partially held in the city) with a bit ironic slogan -Dynamic Tianjin :-)

I guess Tianjin started aggressive when Mayor Dai Xiang Long came in half a decade ago ? The Tianjin WFC and Hai He development was his idea ? Tianjin should be able to develop into the northern Shanghai if it keeps moving aggressively. It needs to open up more aggressively to foreign investments. There is risk that asset inflation will go up, but that's the only way to move into top tier city. All top global city has a busy sea port, CBD with nice sea bay or river, excellent public transport and an open economy that attract foreign investments and talents. Tianjin has all these resources, but need continue to be aggressive. St Regis 6 star hotel coming into Tianjin means a big confidence vote that this city has the potential to move into same tier as Beijing, Shanghai. Hope the current Mayor continue to push hard with the current momentum in developing Tianjin.

yes and no. It seems the fast development started when he became mayor, but it may be a coincidence. I don't think the Tianjin WFC was his specific idea, but he did focus on developing more along Hai He with nice parks, roads, etc when it was before a concrete ditch filled with trash and surrounded by poor neighborhoods and only used by epic fishermen. Now you can see swimmers, ice and casual fishermen, and tour boats on the river, it's a great improvement.

From gaoloumi. Bohai forum is still closed for computers with a non Chinese ip under their weird 海禁 policy. Isolationism to keep the forum safe from foreign devils? I don't really know.

Just back from Tianjin
I'm amazed
It was 7years before that I visited Tianjin last time
and it changed so much during these years
not only buildings but also environment
I fall in love with Tianjin
I wish a great city stands beside Beijing!
Go! Tianjin
