OMG, that area is gonna be so congested! Pity my friends staying in Gold Coast and Villa Emas condo. The only good thing is that they can just take a walk to Queensbay.

So, it's now called 'Queensbay' huh? When I was involved in the project some 12 years back, we referred it as 'Bayan Bay'. I thought Bayan Bay sounded better...

So much has been changed! I see now they have more Marina Villas... even the Condos have been changed? Is the water theme park built? Where's the 'Fisherman's Wharf'? And the Clubhouse has been scaled down?

BUKIT BINTANG OF PENANG

What's next after Gurney Drive, Upper Penang Road, Belissa Row, E-Gate and Queensbay? "BUKIT BINTANG" of Penang!

Bukit Bintang of Penang

By ONG YEE TING

PENANG: The sprawling two-hectare Penang New World Park at Swatow Lane, being redeveloped at a cost of RM17 million, will be the new ?Bukit Bintang? of the state.

A complex, ready in April next year, will be an all-in-one location for food and entertainment.

It will comprise a 28-stall hawker centre, a covered performance stage and blocks of shophouses.

Developer PPB Hartabina senior manager Wong Kah Keen said the hawker centre would serve the street food of Penang.

?Shoplots will be occupied by high-end cafes, bistros, pubs and even some retail shops,? he said, adding that the complex was built with the ?Bukit Bintang? concept in mind.

NEW HAWKERS SITE:Hawkers from Swatow Lane checking out the stalls.

Wong said the management would introduce into Penang some of the interesting branded food and beverage outlets such as the Irish Pub.

?We spent RM17mil on the building cost alone and our target is to make this place the new landmark for the island in conjunction with the coming Visit Malaysia Year 2007,? he added.

There will be parking bays for 88 motorcycles and 136 cars and two parking lots for buses.

?The complex will be unique in that it will have a combination of almost everything that would attract tourists to Penang,? he said.

Project architect Chan Su Min said interesting features in the complex would include seven double-storey outlets with a ?heritage? look.

?The complex will have a beautiful landscape with many trees and fountains,? he added.

Penang Municipal councillor Teh Leong Meng said he would try to obtain the certificate of fitness for the complex as soon as possible.

?This will enable the nearby hawkers to move in soon. This is in line with our relocation of roadside hawkers policy,? he told a press conference after attending a dialogue session between the hawkers and the developer.

Teh said everything would be resolved by Dec 7 and the hawkers could move in by mid December.

?The official launch of the Penang New World Park will be in April when the whole project, including the shophouses under phase two, is completed,? he said.

New shopping experience up north
Friday December 1, 2006
TheStar

MORE than 100 retail outlets and the Jusco Departmental Store at Queensbay Mall in Bayan Baru, Penang, will open today(Friday).

The mall's general manager Tony Teo said Queensbay, the biggest retail property development on the island, offers a totally new shopping experience to customers in the northern states.

?Queensbay Mall is unique in every way, from its architectural design, floor layout and most importantly, the excellent tenant mix,? he said at the Queensbay pre-launch at Cititel Hotel yesterday.

Teo said the mall, with free parking fa- cility, would be open from 10am to 10.30pm daily.

?We have about 4,500 parking lots. During the first week, there will be 70 personnel directing traffic,? he added.

State Tourism Development and Environ-ment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the opening of Queensbay enabled Penang to position itself as a shopping heaven.

He later flagged off a convoy of 60 trishaws from the hotel to mark the pre-launch.

The trishaws adorned with colourful Queens-bay umbrellas carried the mall's retail tenants and members from the hospitality and tourism industry through the streets in George Town.

Jusco comes to Penang
Thursday November 30, 2006
TheStar

THE latest Jusco Departmental Store at Queensbay Mall in Bayan Baru, Penang, has brought the number of its outlets to 15 nationwide.

The anchor tenant occupying more than 23,690sq m at the mall will open tomorrow, said store manager Hamiruddin Bakar.

?We come here with the aim of providing the local residents low prices coupled with great value.

?Besides, the opening will mark our first store in Penang. We hope it will provide customers with a wide range and greater variety of products,? he said before giving out 5,000 copies of The Star at the Penang Bridge Toll Plaza yesterday.

He said that Queensbay Mall, dubbed the largest and longest mall on the island with a built-up area of 232,257sq m, is located in a strategic spot of Bayan Baru.

?It is easily accessible via the Coastal Road and the area has a high density population,? he said.

The opening, said Hamiruddin, has created more than 400 jobs for the locals.

Another 5,000 copies of The Star will be given out at the same place today.

Went to Queensbay just now...it is not very crowded as i thought..maybe is due to the heavy rain...or maybe the size of the mall make me feel that there are not many ppl...hehehe

hmm...talk about this mall...i feel that it is not well organise enough...they didn't put much effort in placing the shops...although there are a few zones..blue, orange and green zone... it seem mess up..

the design...too much pillar liao la...and the mall should be built nearer to the sea..so that they can place all the restaurants just beside the sea..wow..relax the meal while enjoying the sea view...but...wat a waste...

this mall, i feel that some part look like Midvalley (in term of the length of the mall), some part look like the curve ( the atrium) and some part look like BTS (the escalator)..haha...mix...

No matter how...i still feel that Gurney is better than this brand new mall...Gurney is more organise and well maintenance..But, i maybe chose to shop in this mall...first it is nearer to my house..i can just use the Costal Highway..within 10 minutes..i'll be reaching there...2nd..more choice..haha...3rd..there will be a cinema in the future...4th...Gurney always jam like held..and less parking lots compare to queensbay.

As a conclusion..i'll give this mall 70% out of 100%..
i wish to c they improve the decoration of the mall when come to some festival...i feel that the Xmas' decoration in that mall is just so so...but Gurney xmas decoration..of god...fascinating

i'll post some pics after my stressfull exam..

Pablo,

You should go into architecture design. I totally agree with you on the pillars. It's overkill. The pillars should be hidden between the walls of the stores. Wow, alfresco dining by the sea, what a concept. Too bad, the developers are not smart enough to do that and to hire a retail architect to design the mall, instead of building another same old rojak mall.

Can't wait for citywalk and the mall in i-city, shah alam to be completed as it is designed by world renowned jon jerde. I am sure later on, some malls will start copying his designs.
