Render V Reality??

ok, this has come up so many times over past few years.
When we finally a see a rendering of a new /planned tower, we all go goo gar over the potential additon to our city.
Renders always seem taller or shinier or glassier etc etc. but are we actually happy with eventual outcome? most of time seems people are disappointed only because they had the vision of the rendering .
Should we actually take renders seriously? or wait and see idea?
how can anyone know what a new skyscraper is going to look in reality? these days 3D stuff can be very good.
Has anyone ever been happier with reality more so then the intitial rendering? colours seem to always change.
please post some examples.
ill start with some notables.

Q1

i m happy with Q1. yes its not as "shiny" as render but its not an issue with me. i rather a good shape any day

Brisbane square

alot of people think Eureka has turned out better then renders.

Brisbane Sq and Eureka both turned out better than the renders IMO.

Brisbane square was diappointing, considering the renders. Eureka turned out way better.

My gripes with renders come, particually with residential towers. Most will show them with beatiful reflective glass and different contrasts in colour, particually when it comes to balcony finishes. For example, a render of a high rise resi tower may show its baludstading to be be reflective and blue, however you then read the summary of finishes carefully in council reports ect.. most state that it will consist of clear glass, thus not really exciting.

Well I think Q1 was a particular failure but we can't blame it on the 3D visualisation. The problem in this case was they simply couldn't be bothered getting the right glass.

Generally I think renderings are a good indication - they do allow for glorification of the designs though through use of etra light sources and other enhancements.

this one makes me laugh-

regarded by me as one of the worst developments in the city. I see it as where the weathy western suburbs go highrise.

We had a guest speaker in class the other day who did the internal renders of Eureka. They've also done hte renders on the new convention center.

Anyway we asked him why the renders always look so unrealistic and it's apparently done on purpose. They have the computing power and the math to make things look photo realistic, but their clients always end up prefering the fantasy version. It's a shame really, would be nice to see how it was actually going to look.

Well renders are designed for marketing to sell/promote the building rather then for skyscraper city nuts who crave accuracy.

I personally never ever expect a building to be exactly like a render. Rather I just use it to gauge the shape, style and impact of the building. Minor things like colour, glass shades etc really have to wait until the building is finished.

thats another ploy by artists. they are told to only put in certain bldgs.so theres standout more. which is understandable for marketing.

In terms of amazing renders that lead to a crap building I'd have to nominate Festival Towers. It wasn't just that it looked like a cheap version of the render, in many ways it was completely different, and for the worse.

I think Riparian Plaza is a great example of a building that turned out exactly like the renders. Can't complain about that one. I don't think Seidlers designs really lend themselves to exaggerated renders anyway.

And IMO Deutsche Bank Place is one of those rare buildings that turned out better. The renders should bluey-grey facade but it actually turned out to be an incredibly sexy black.

This is the render of Latitude.

And this is what it looks like...

Hardly the same building, in my opinion.

EDIT: I think the main thing renders need to make them more realistic is distorted reflections. As we know just about every building with glass on the planet has distorted reflections.

For example.
