Veszprém

Since I see there are almost no discussions or photo-threads about that beautiful country called Hungary, let's start showing a bit about the very very pretty univeristy town of Veszprém. It's one of the oldest towns in Hungary, and just 15Km north of the Balaton lake.

So, let's see how it looks like (they even have a skyscraper! )...

Veszprem used to be called the "Town of Queens", and its almost 1,000 years old. Thanks for the pics, the city looks really clean and old buildings look reburbished and impressive.

It's also good that the town center retained is medieval walled acropolis, one of the few towns that did next to Esztergom.

Its really interesting how old hungarians improved obliterate traces of the slavic population who lived at hungarian territory.
For example at Romania, where is the big slavic influence at placenames, the original names of the cities, rivers and counties are unchanged..Bistritza, Tolitza, Ilfov, Braila, Slatina...

We do not delete it. Veszprém = slav bezprem = his meaning unexplained, maybe headstrong or hilly

Two nearly settlement:
Padrag (from a Slav word: friend). and Kenese (lord), etc.

The origin of the romanian place-names in Transylvania:

source: Kniezsa István

Romanian place-name with a Hungarian origin
Romanian place-name with a Slav origin
Romanian place-name with a German origin
Romanian place-name with a Roman origin

So Beszterce in the Romanian language with a German origin. German Bistritz with a Slav origin.

Hungarian place-name with a Slavic origin (red marked):

Yes, but in Transylvania live big hungarian minority its understanding that the most of placenames in Transylvania have hungarian origin but Oltenia, Muntenia, Moldova are full of slavic placenames.
But in Hungary is very little of slavic placenames, for example in Romania slavic influence isnt only in geography but in culture and history too..

.. Before hungarians lived at pannonia basin mostly slavic people..and after comming of hungarians slavic population of pannonia basin is away..but where?
Now live in HU 10 milion hungarians, probably most of them have slavic origin..

So what if we are slavs by genetics? We dont wish to identify ourself culturally as slavs. In fact,if we were wiped out by the tatars(which we were, according to some historians),it would mean that at the end of the 18th century, slavs tried to assimilate themselves. Get over this "lebensraum" topic.

BTW,where are the traces of the avars, the huns and the celts, who were all here before you? You did a good job erasing them all.

In Pannonia the early-medieval population: 50% with a Slav origin, 10-15% turkic, 35-40% magyar. This is true for the today's Slovak area. On the Alföld: 75% magyar, 20% turkic or iranian, 5% slav. Transylvania: 50% magyar 40% slav, 10% turkic.

Present day the clearest population with Hungarian blood (steppic origin) lives on the Southern Slovakia. The Csallóköz Hungarian population the mostly turanid. The mostly Slav on Budapest, and Őrség, the slightest Slav the Csángó population in Moldova.

Today maybe 30% a slav origin in total hungarian population.

Yes, joining the Hungarians was profitable. Theotmar bishop complains in 900: the Slavs (moravians) have Hungarian habits, their head is shaved, even their bishops wear Hungarian dresses. With four years after the Hungarian conquest!

The Turkish wars affected the area less. There the Hungarian population since the Hungarian conquest indigenous.
