1 December 2016

Xinhua

A museum dedicated to the Xibe ethnic group is currently under construction in Shenyang, with the aim of commemorating and keeping alive the traditional culture of the ethnic group.

The Xibe ethnic group mainly inhabits Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and Liaoning province. They traditionally earned a living through raising animals and lived a nomadic lifestyle. They were known for being proficient in archery and horse riding, and for being brave soldiers.

The museum, which is currently under construction, is located in Shenbei New Zone in Shenyang, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, which has the largest concentration of Xibe people in this area.

The construction of the museum on the north bank of the Puhe River started on May 24, 2015.

The museum, covering an area of 9,804 square meters, will have three floors, containing exhibition halls displaying the history, folk customs and intangible cultural heritage of the Xibe ethnic group. The museum has received about 73 million yuan ($10.59 million) of investment.

So far, the museum has already completed construction of the main building; decoration of the interior is now in progress. It is anticipated that the museum will open to the public in May 2017.

Urumqi to build citywide free Wi-Fi network
15 December 2016
China Daily

People in Urumqi, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, are expected to use citywide free Wi-Fi in 2018 as the city launches an ambitious plan to cover the area with a free Wi-Fi network.

The Urumqi government would cooperate with China Telecom Corp in the three-year-long project with the latter undertaking the larger share of the 100 million yuan ($14.42 million) investment.

New Wi-Fi hotspots would be implanted into the city's existing wide-range telecom network, including 3G and 4G base stations and video surveillance system.

The construction work of operation and management platform for the "wireless city" project is already completed.

Wi-Fi network will soon be built in major government agencies, commercial districts and transportation hubs.

In 2017, the project would focus on the expansion of Wi-Fi network in universities, office buildings and hotels in the city.

And in 2018, the network would extend to industry parks and major roads in the city.

Changsha county develops airport economic zone
China Daily Excerpt

Following in the wake of the economic opportunities created by Changsha Huanghua International Airport, Changsha county is in the process of constructing an airport economic zone.

This development will significantly benefit Hunan province's capital city by focusing on boosting the investment of the aviation industry in Changsha. It will also encourage the settlement of modern services with a high added value.

The economic zone will be attractive to many companies on account of its transportation connections, developed infrastructure, and dynamic investment environment.

The area has already seen the arrival of several major projects including Changsha Bailian Outlets Plaza, Hunan SF Express E-commerce Industrial Park, Prologis Logistics Center at Changsha International Airport, China Unicom, and a Hunan Branch of Okay Airways.

Projects are centered on logistics, e-commerce, and aviation. They will lay firm foundations and it is hoped the economic zone will grow and attract future investment.

Transportation hub

The airport, located in the economically important Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan area, lies within a dynamic and far-reaching transport network including airways, railways and motorways. This greatly increases the connectivity between this region and some of China's leading economic areas.

Additionally, plans have been drawn up to build intercity light-rail, subway, and maglev lines to connect the area with downtown Changsha.

The area's regional and national transport links will accelerate both development and the investment of capital.

Industrial cluster

The economic zone is focused on the modern service industry and airport-related hi-tech industries. A wide range of industries have already invested in excess of 5 billion yuan ($730 million) in the region. These include companies involved in logistics, aviation, commerce and culture and sports.

This newly developed zone is located within the vicinity of 13 state-level and province-level industrial parks including Changsha National Economic and Technical Development Zone. It will host 143 of world's top 500 enterprises. It is believed the surrounding wealth of enterprising companies will aid the zone's development.

Ring road in Lhasa expected to ease traffic
China Daily Excerpt
Jan. 5, 2017

Lhasa, capital of the Tibet autonomous region, is expected to have a ring road opened by June this year to improve traffic and accelerate the city's development.

With a planned investment of 11.3 billion yuan ($1.62 billion), the ring road is nearly 100 kilometers long, with seven tunnels and 27 bridges, according to the city government.

The road links Lhasa Gongkar Airport in the south and three highways. It also crosses over the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

After it opens, drivers will able to circle the city's downtown area in just two hours at a maximum speed of 60 km per hour.

As Lhasa has an average altitude of 3,600 meters, the ring road has been dubbed "China's highest ring road". Construction started in October 2015, and the project is mostly complete. Part of the road has already opened for trial operation.

Lin Sheng, vice-mayor of Lhasa, said at a meeting on Tuesday that the road is a milestone in the city's development.

"By linking accesses to the city center in all directions, the ring road will greatly improve the city's traffic network and ease congestion," he said, adding that the road is expected to boost the city's development and make travel more convenient.

Wuxi launches $23 billion development projects
Feb. 15, 2017
China Daily Excerp

The city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, officially launched 136 major large-scale construction projects on Feb 12.

The declaration was part of a wider initiative across 13 different Jiangsu province cities in which a total of 1363 projects with an investment volume of 1.33 trillion yuan ($193 billion) were officially kick started.

The 136 projects that are now underway in Wuxi are worth 158.6 billion yuan ($23 billion). This sets new records both in terms of the number of projects launched and the volume of annual investment started in the city.

The move once again announces the city of Wuxi as an industrial hub in the south Yangtze River Delta. The newly launched 105 industrial projects will require an investment volume of more than 117 billion yuan, which accounts for nearly three quarters of all the projects. It is intended that the investment will further catalyze industrial development.

At the groundbreaking ceremony hosted by Wuxi's mayor Wang Quan, Wuxi's highest official, Li Xiaomin, announced the launch of all 136 projects, which he said would play a critical role in driving the city's economic development and help to upgrade many of the city's industries.

Amidst the vast number of highly diverse projects, the High-end Processing and Manufacturing Center of China Ship Ocean Exploration Technology Industrial Park is arguably the most eye-catching and significant.

The project came to fruition in 2015 through the cooperation of the local Wuxi government and China State Shipbuilding Corporation, a company aimed at fostering a strong state-level marine economic cluster in Wuxi. This project will include developing military vessels and conducting underwater robot R&D. Upon completion estimates suggest the project will yield an annual profit revenue of more than 3 billion yuan.

Guangxi’s ports make the right connections
China Daily Excerpt

Containers are stacked together for shipment at a port in Guangxi. A new Chongqing-Guangxi-Singapore link will provide quicker access to Southeast Asia and beyond for goods from central and western areas of China. (Asia News Photo)

On a scorching May morning, a 26-car freight train packed with motorcycles and paper products pulled into Qinzhou Port East Station, in the coastal city of Qinzhou in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Arriving 48 hours after its departure from Chongqing on May 12, a southwestern city 1,480 kilometers from the terminus, the train ran on a new line that reduced travel time by more than two days.

But this was not the end of the journey for the cargo. After passing clearance procedures at Qinzhou Port, the goods were then transported another 2,600 km by boat to Singapore, which took roughly six days.

The train’s arrival at Qinzhou, part of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, marked the commencement of the trial operation of the Southern Transport Corridor. The route connects Chongqing through Guangxi to Singapore.

Beibu Gulf Economic Zone comprises six cities: Nanning, Beihai, Qinzhou, Fangchenggang, Yulin and Chongzuo.

“The corridor will boost our trade activities with Southeast Asia, and even farther with Africa,” said Zhou Xiaoxi, chairman of Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group, the State-owned company that manages Qinzhou Port.

Before the launch of the route, goods from western China to Southeast Asia were either delivered via scattered rail links to the Beibu Gulf area, or shipped eastward along the Yangtze River to Shanghai, before heading for the South China Sea to reach their destinations.

For cargo from Chongqing to Singapore, the detour through the Yangtze River to Shanghai takes an extra 2,100 km compared to the new channel. Altogether, the Chongqing-Guangxi-Singapore link now cuts travel time by more than 20 days.

“(The new route) will significantly shorten the distance, lower the logistics costs and allow the entire western (region of) China to have a new way to bypass potential bottlenecks at the Three Gorges Dam (on the Yangtze River),” said Chan Chun Sing, Singapore’s minister in the prime minister’s office, at a China-Singapore trade forum earlier this year.

With a location that makes it a crucial logistical node for the China-led Belt and Road Initiative, Guangxi aims to enhance connectivity between inland China and its trade partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
