[Ahvaz] Metro | U/C
Project Outline
The population of Ahvaz city, the capital of Khuzistan Province, which according to a census conducted in 2004 stood at 1.2 million is forecasted to reach 1.6 million in 2021. The city will, therefore, urgently need modern transportation systems, particularly urban railway networks, in order to retain its position as a leading agricultural, industrial and educational center. The phase zero studies of Ahwaz Urban Railway Project carried out by Andishkar Consulting Engineers in 2002 calls for the construction of four lines, with a total length of approximately 70 km. Line 1 At first, Line 1 of a future metro network will be constructed. This first line will be from north-east to south-west through the city center of Ahvaz crossing the river Karun. The total length of line 1 is about 23 km and will have 24 stations to provide easy access to the city's major commercial and administrative centers. The travel time, including stops at stations, will be about 40 minutes. Traffic modeling results indicate that line 1 will carry the most passengers (14000 passenger hours per hour each way at peak traffic times). The line, which consists of 14 km of underground insertion in the central sections and 8,5 km at grade insertion in the suburban sections: The underground alignment can be divided in three sections: 1.The southern section (Lot I): from Kargar Square to University Square with a length of 4,18 km; 2.The central section: from University Square to Darvazeh Square with a length of 6,39 km; 3.The northern section (Lot II): from Darvazeh Square to Airport Square with a length of 3,39 km. ![]() Key Stats: ●Tunneling: 15×2 km with an excavation diameter of 4.25 meters. ● Ground-level railway: 8 km ● Rail laying: 23 km ● Stations: 24 ● Parking and depot buildings: 40,000 square meters ● Central control building: 5,000 square meters ●Supply and installation of equipment for 23 km of railways, including locomotives & wagons. Method of Execution The Subway tunnels will be built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The stations will be deep, semi-deep and at ground level. Phases: 1- Design and construction of Northeastern tunnel and stations. 2- Design & construction of Southeastern tunnel and stations. 3- Design & construction of depots. 4- Design & construction of parking facilities. 5- Design & and Construction of Tunnels and stations in the central section of the route. 6- Design & construction of central control building, supply and installation of equipment. ![]()

Metro construction near ancient Ahvaz halted
Thursday, April 26, 2007 - IranMania.com Ahvaz - Association of Cultural Heritage Fans in Khuzestan province has called for archeological studies in Chahar-Shir region of Ahvaz to find out more about the ancient Sassanid city of Hormuz Ardeshir. Experts believe that if the Ahvaz underground urban railway line passes through the already specified route, the historical city will be destroyed, said CHN. The protest by the Association of Cultural Heritage Fans has resulted in bringing the construction operations of metro to a halt until further archeological studies are conducted in the region. Head of the Research Center of Iran?s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) has called on Khuzestan Cultural Heritage Department to explain the reason for permitting the construction of metro without conducting archeological studies first. According to ICHHTO rules and regulations, any development project should be conducted only after receiving permission from the organization. A cultural heritage activist, Mojtaba Gahsotouni, said that the Association of Cultural Heritage Fans supports the decision for preventing the destruction of Chahar-Shir Square which was earlier registered on the list of national heritage sites. Hormuz Ardeshir city which is presently within the boundaries of Ahvaz was registered on the national heritage list in 1931. |
