Oh! no problem. If u have more collection, please keep them coming. I am very excited.

Among all, i love the National Theatre and the foutain infront of it. It has such a strong iconic feature. I feel sad that the building gave way to something else.

actually, the second pic in the second set is really urban - its just next to the former world's tallest hotel, and is currently surrounded multiple landmark developments

Thanks for the nice pictures.

How lucky of you to have 'participated' in the Festival of the Nine Emperor Gods, a Taoist festival held on the 9th day of the 9th month of the Chinese calendar. It usually ends off at East Coast. You have a nice pic of a pill-box, many line the East Coast/Bedok area back then.

There are 2 pics of RAF Changi, one showing Cranwell Rd. Alas the buildings are no longer in existence.

Thanks again.

Just yesterday someone shared tons of rare old pics of Singapore in this thread at MyCarForum.com. Visit here for more: http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/Othe...re..._P1754510

Definitely jaw-dropping. Examples from his wonderful collection:

Johore Road Shophouses (next to Rochor Complex and Fu Lu Shou Complex):

North Bridge Road:

Selegie Road Flats (still around today):

Hock Lam Street:

Mount Faber:

Bras Basah Road (CHIJMES on the left):

Bugis Street:

But is now less filthy ... I used to stay in such a derelict shophouse before it was demolished.

Thanks for sharing those rare pics....I agree that the shophouses looked so filthy then...Singapore looked very much like some other cities in the region back then....

I guess today we have the luxury of sitting at the computer and remarking how artificial they are today

(but I'm glad that some are still with us)

My aunt lives in an old shophouse at Jalan Besar, still pretty much unmodified. Wooden beams, resonating wooden floors...

The area still has the "feel", but I feel is diminishing.

Those HDB flats next to the Singapore River should be where the old Ellenborough Market was, which was the predecessor of the current Victoria Street Wholesale centre. Now that site is the Central shopping centre.

yah I think they were there until the mid 90s?

they would have been great for photo-opportunities....

I think everything there was demolished to allow the North-East line to be built....

To me Jalan Besar has already lost only some of its traditional businesses to modernisation. For e.g., barbers operating along 5-foot ways, old-world coffeeshops (one still exist at the end of Maude Road, serving traditional kaya toast using charcoal fire), old-fashion electrical appliance shops (some still surviving) etc.

The area around Tyrwhitt Road is still unchanged for more than 50 years, although some businesses have changed hands and the old stadium rebuilt. I can still park at the same road-side parking lot my dad used to park his Morris Minor about 30 years ago, and that's quite a feat in fast-changing Singapore.

I love the pics of Hock Lam Street and Clarke Quay! Absolutely amazing, Singapore has changed so much, I only wish I was around to see how it was back then, to see the changes with my own eyes.
