Kunming Masterplan

Update:

Kisho Kurokawa's masterplan had been rejected by the local authorities last year. The Netherlands Airport Consultants (NACO) now have been invited to re-design the masterplan.

China approves construction of major aviation hub in SW China

China's aviation authority has approved the construction of a major international airport in Kunming, capital of the southwestern Yunnan Province.

The construction would start later this month and was expected to be completed in three years, said a provincial government source.

The airport would be able to handle more than 20 million passengers and 600,000 tons of freight annually upon completion. Its capacity would be expanded to 60 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of freight.

It would cover 21 square kilometers in Dabanqiao town, 20 kilometers from downtown Kunming.

Investment in construction would total 23 billion yuan (294 million U.S. dollars), said Liu Zhijun, deputy director of the Airport Economic Zone in Kunming.

The airport would connect China with southeast and south Asian countries and regions, and become the fourth aviation hub after Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai.

It would also boost the economy and competitiveness of Yunnan, China's portal to southeast and south Asia, said Liu.

OMG! This is pretty damn ambitious! Good for Kunming and China!

Wow! This is gonna be China's answer to Dubai World Central.

If the initial masterplan gets to be built, Kunming's New International Airport will truly be an 'aerotropolis' or 'airport city' like no other in East Asia. Now, if only Beijing or Shanghai can integrate this 'airport city' concept to their respective airports as well.

Well, it is somewhat hard to find a set of renders, but I believe that this one, which I posted before is the terminal design for New Kunming Airport:

Kunming New International Airport Terminal Model

Finally, I found a terminal model, pretty cool!
The design adopts factors of minority people's traditional architecture style in Yunnan Province.

@ ChinaboyUSA

OMFG! That looks bigger than Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok's Terminal 1.

Btw, I've read somewhere that Wuhan also wants to be the "fourth" largest Chinese hub.

Which of the two cities should rightfully claim this title?

On another matter, Tianjin (China's third financial center after Shanghai and Shenzhen) should have been the "fourth hub" and not Kunming or Wuhan given Tianjin's importance.

In fact, I believe Tianjin can rival Shanghai in about a-decade-and-a-half's time, by the way things are going up there. The future masterplan for Tianjin is simply other-worldly.

Chengdu and Chongqing are also up-and-coming mega-cities that deserve to wrestle with the Wuhan, Tianjin, and Kunming for that title.

Yes it has numerous gates yet most of them are for smaller planes. So taking the proportion into account the terminal shouldn't be bigger than CLK T1.

In terms of passenger volume Chengdu is so far the No.4 city. I think Kunming is No.5.

Consider the air plane's size, I think that in general, the planes in CLK are bigger, but that doesn't mean what you said most of them are for smaller planes in Kunming New Airport, with much more international routes will operate in Kunming New Airport, more bigger sizes planes will add to service.

So far, Chengdu is the No. 4 on pessenger volume, but Kunming is right after it. But Kunming will play a more important role after the completion of its new airport, especially on international flights.

Aviation Hub's size is not necessarily have to be the same index to reflect a city's importance comprehensively, therefore what we emphasize here is the aviation position of Kunming New Airport, it is placed to be the No. 4 aviation gateway of mainland China, Kunming is on a strategically important location for China on connecting Southeast Asia and South Asia, as well as the air corridor to connect European countries to the west of China.

When the Kunming New Airport start to operate, pessengers from western China don't have to detour to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in order to fly to more Southeast Asian and South Asian destinations, it also saves the traveling time of flying to Europe destionations especially from the Southwest China via Kunming, even the middle part of China.

In regarding to Wuhan, I assume that more domestic air routes will add to it because Wuhan is a big industry city in the middle of China. So in another word, Kunming New Airport is more important in term of the international air connections. About Tianjin, since Beijing is nearby, the Beijing Capital Airport plays a main role on International flights, and Tianjin's advantage is its port.

Also, the Aviation Hub here means a very important entry policy of China.
Currently, only Beijing Capital Airport, Shanghai Pudong and Guangzhou New Baiyun Airport have the authorization to endorse the visa upon landing for foreign visitors, which means if you don't obtain a visa in your own country through embassy or consulates, you got to fly to Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou first to get the visa so as to enter China. After Kunming New Airport start to run, foreign visitors will have one more choice to get visa upon landing.
