So does Tokyo and Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou (the custom system are respectively two individual ones between Hong Kong and mainland). It doesn't have to be so cut-and-clear. A huge market like China should be able to sustain many different hubs for many different airlines. Currently PEK, PVG, HKG, and to an extent CAN are air hubs for China (in addition for ICN for those travelling to/from North America) In the future airports in Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Xian, Kunming, Chongqing, Shenyang will all have the potential to be "fortress hubs" for China's three (or four) main airlines. Each airline group/alliance will have its own system of hubs, similar to how the US legacy carriers have their own system of hubs.

By the way, WOW!!

Why do most airports in China have parallel runways whereas American airports often have runways at all points of the compass? I understand multiple runways are built to accommodate changes in prevailing winds throughout the year, but surely China has those too, right?
