Thanks for the commentary MilwaukeeMark. My nuclear family (parents, siblings) actually live in Milwaukee. Salt Lake City definitely has a unique vibe. I think a lot of that is due to with SLC being a contrast to the more conservative suburbs.

Eggs in the City is in the Sugarhouse nabe, which is known for it's liberal and funky vibe. Glad you enjoyed.

There's definitely been a decent amount of new residential infill in the city in the last 10 years, and especially the last 5. I hope the trend continues.

They'll be done with the exterior for the most part by then, but neither tower opens until spring / summer of next year, 2011.

In other news, the third residential tower which currently only has its base built, now has an official name:The Cascade. The fact that they've named it seems to indicate it may start rising soon

New museum building to include fresh exhibits
May 23rd, 2010 @ 12:21pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)
-- The new Utah Museum of Natural History will include about 2,400 fresh items on display.

The building under construction near the mouth of Red Butte Canyon is about two-thirds complete. Officials hope to open it sometime in 2011.

Will Black, the museum's supervisor for exhibit services, says less than 10 percent of the objects on display at the museum's current location will be on exhibit at the new building. The rest of the items will be new exhibits.

The displays will include the bones of a dinosaur called a barosaurus, a mammoth skull and a gourd once used by ancient American Indians.

Many of the objects will be on special brass mounts intended to protect them in a major earthquake.

Downtown Salt Lake City overcoming recession
Thu, 05/27/2010 - 10:23
By Ken Holman, Overland Group

Quote:
Panelists met Wednesday, May 25, to discuss the City Creek development project in downtown Salt Lake City.

"Salt Lake City could be the epicenter for growth [in the west] for years to come. We're talking about sustainable growth. Office space in many western cities is going at fire sales prices," one panelist stated. "You can buy office space at 20 cents per square foot in some cities, but then you have to live there."

In addition to 222 S. Main, the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Deseret Book's new headquarters and Blue Lemon restaurant, the City Creek development, spanning from Main Street and South Temple to 300 South, has seen a resurgence of 30 new small businesses opening at the street level.

Salt Lake City 5th for best cities of the new decade
Published: Wednesday, May 26, 2010 2:54 p.m. MDT

Quote:
SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City will be the fifth-best city nationwide in which to do business in the next 10 years, according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine.

The magazine selected Salt Lake because of its internationally recognized research in genetics and health sciences that has spawned dozens of new and successful businesses. Also highlighted was the local labor pool that Kiplinger's labeled "tops for its technical knowledge and outstanding work ethic. Utah's relatively low wages, taxes and operating costs create an ideal haven to run a business — and you can't beat the easy access to myriad ski resorts."

I was pretty surprised a few weeks ago when I was driving down I-15 and saw that The Promontory is already so far along. I haven't been paying very close attention in this last year since so many other development projects were stalled (especially around where I lived).

Yeah it appears to be fully clad. It took forever though.

So whereabouts are you? Sugarhouse?

I used to live in Sugarhouse (yes, that comment was a direct reference to the Sugarhouse Fiasco). I live in South Salt Lake now though.

That's why I mentioned that At least they got one project up (Urbana on 11th).
