That's why hip hop, drugs, and organized crime grew out of places like old NYC. I think hip hop is probably the only thing that really carried over into today's NY culture... Well, I guess the drugs and the crime to a much lighter extent... but, definitely not like back then.
I remember the boom box carrying phase of the 80s and 90s! Talk about flashbacks!!! |

While I don't miss all the violence and the graffiti and litter on the streets, there are certain aspects of that era that I miss.
Yes AirJay, the three-card monty guys and the tough talking street hustlers made New York interesting. |

Those were good times when you could see cats just blasting music from their boxes, I get good memories thinking about that. I miss real mixtapes too, i'm talking about the cassettes, my sister used to bring so many of them home long long long ago..

This is one of the most sadly beautiful thread I have ever read on SCC. One of the best thread ever!

I've looked at this thread four times now, and I still don't really know what to say about it. Quite possibly the most compelling group of photos I've ever seen. That time in the life of New York was tragic in some ways and beautiful in other ways. You had the devastation of the crack epidemic, but you also had hip hop.

WOW, NYC has improved 150% since those days, the only cool thing about the 80's was train graffiti,
there was a lot of cool stuff to see.....Harlem now is totally different, its quite nice...

I worked in the South Bronx during the 80's, looking at these pictures giving me the Deja-vu. I also remember a TV show called the " Equalizer " had filmed in the south Bronx and the set of the show was suppose to be during the World War two period.
