A fully loaded 77W could have problems out of NCL which I assume is partly why Emirates haven't upgraded the flight because they don't want to run the risk of having to offload cargo or passengers. Instead they've decided to add capacity at MAN.

The reason I say 757 is more to be with the amount of passengers rather than plane size. The 787 is a bigger plane but it's lighter and burns less fuel so should make the economics better.

I'm not sure about the A320 to be honest, but I can't think of any operators flying any across the Atlantic which suggests it wouldn't work.

BA use an A318 from London City, which is part of the A320 'family'. But then that's just business class, and has to stop in Ireland for refueling.

Are you suggesting that your wife would object to your spending several hours of your potentially free time together pretending to fly planes?

Yes. Terribly unreasonable request on her part. I decided to call it a day when I started talking to her about the bad weather in Gibraltar and how I had trouble getting my aircraft down safely. To me it was real. To her, wierd.

According to NIA's website departure boards there's a flight, LS6276, that leaves Newcastle at 14:30 and arrives Newcastle at 15:00. What's all that about?

A training flight perhaps? Jet 2 have a few newer aircraft types (newer for them anyway) so perhaps its familirisation for jet2 crew.

Jet2holidays to create 100 new jobs at Newcastle Airport
by Karen Dent, The Journal, February 9th 2012

PACKAGE holiday specialist Jet2holidays is creating around 100 North East jobs after announcing five new routes from Newcastle Airport. The group, which is marking its fifth anniversary, will start flying to Dubrovnik in Croatia, Venice, Rome, Reus in Spain and Bodrum in Turkey, bringing the number of destinations it flies to from Newcastle to 27.

Steve Lee, Jet2 Holidays commercial director, said: “Hopefully this will bring 100 new jobs to Newcastle Airport. Newcastle is a large operation. As well as pilots, we have cabin crew and engineers and check-in staff. There’s probably about 250 people.

“The majority of the new staff are likely to be cabin crew and check-in staff. With the cabin crew, we like to recruit locally and also the check-in staff. Newcastle has six aircraft and is a very significant base for us. We’ve been at Newcastle for a number of years and I think we’re the largest airline based at Newcastle. We fly to 27 destinations – it’s important operationally and as a hub.”

An additional plane will be added to the company’s Newcastle base when the airline starts flying to the new destinations in April.

£3.2m Newcastle International Airport extension is on schedule
by Michael Brown, The Journal, February 11th 2012

The extension as it is today, at the half way stage

BUSINESS travellers will soon be able to breeze through airport security checks thanks to a £3.2m extension of Newcastle International Airport. Despite recent wintry weather, the 5,242 sq ft glass-fronted addition, which will double the size of the baggage screening area, is on schedule to open in time for the busy summer season.

Visiting the site at the halfway stage yesterday, Newcastle North MP Catherine McKinnell said that at a time of rising unemployment and reductions in other international transport links with the region it was positive to see such a scheme going ahead.

“The airport opens up the North East as a viable place to do business, giving access to our top-class manufacturing, financial and professional services, and is such a key part of our transport infrastructure,” said Ms McKinnell, and it is vital that it so accessible in light of the disappointing closure of ferry routes to Northern Europe.

As well as the terminal extension, in recent months the airport’s immigration arrivals area has been refurbished and the pier that houses the departure gates has been re-clad to transform the southern exterior of the building. Airport planning and corporate affairs director, Graham Mason said it was important to see investment to improve passengers’ journeys, particularly ahead of the new Jet2.com, Flybe and Cosmos routes opening to Southern Europe, Scandinavia and Florida. “It gives us options to put in more security lanes, with the latest equipment, as the airport grows. The space to load hand luggage into the X-ray machine is much bigger, making life easier and there will be a designated family lane.

While this is actually a continuation of recent posts on the "Regional Funding" thread, it is also quite specific to the Airport Thread . . .

Newcastle City Council asks for help with New York flights
by Adrian Pearson, The Journal, February 22nd 2012

CITY leaders have met with Cabinet ministers to discuss Government help to create a Newcastle to New York transatlantic route which would help bring £1bn to the regional economy. A senior delegation from Newcastle City Council made the case for regular flights as part of its pitch to be one of a handful of cities handed a raft of new powers in the Chancellor’s March Budget.

City Council leader Nick Forbes and his chief executive Barry Rowland set out their plans at the Cabinet Office yesterday before Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, Business Secretary Vince Cable and Cities Minister Greg Clark. Mr Forbes is also looking for new borrowing powers which will allow him to spend tens of millions of pounds transforming Newcastle, with the money repaid through the business rates of those moving into new shopping centres and office blocks.

City leaders want Government help to get around strict state aid rules which prevent financial help being offered to private firms. It is thought the city has come close on several previous occasions to securing government support, but never yet clinched a deal. If they are successful it could be worth around £1 bn to the regional economy.

Emirates expands its services at Newcastle Airport
by Michael Brown, The Journal, February 23rd 2012

BUSINESS leaders say Emirates airlines' plans to expand at Newcastle Airport is "phenomenal news" for the region's economy. The firm, which celebrates the fifth anniversary of its services from the North East in September, is set to replace its existing 278-seat Airbus A330 – already the largest passenger plane to fly from the region – with a huge 428- seat Boeing 777.

That means an additional 100,000 people a year could soon be travelling to and from the desert state, or connecting on to do business across Asia and Australasia.

Newcastle International Airport chief executive Dave Laws, said the expanded service, which could mean at least 300 new jobs at the transport hub and in its supply chain, was “a very significant” step for the region. “Despite challenging economic times, the daily service to Dubai has flourished. The growth of this global brand at the airport will bring employment opportunities and increased cargo-carrying capabilities and this in turn will bring economic benefit, trade and investment to the region, he said.

“It’s very much a sign of confidence in both the North East and in Newcastle Airport. Delivering access to Dubai and beyond, on to a global network, has had an incredibly positive impact on the business community – it has improved access to markets as well as import and export operations. Since Emirates began operating from Newcastle Airport, trade from the North East to Australasia has increased by more than 65%.”

This is great news, last year we flew from Newcastle to Mauritius via Dubai, the 777 we flew on from Dubai was great with all the latest entertainment etc, the plane from Newcastle was a bit shabby with less in the form of entertainment, all that I hope that is with the larger planes they have a bigger beer supply as they ran out half way to Dubai, not sure what that says about people from Newcastle

I flew business class to Kuala Lumpur via Dubai with them last year, and agree the plane out of NCL seemed a bit tired compared to the one on the connecting leg. Superb service, though — especially the limo to collect and drop you off at your door at both ends, and a hotel room to kick back in while waiting for your connection. They know what they're doing.

Good news but not really news and pretty much what we expected.

How we all long for a permanent New York route.

I just cant see it happening. Most American airlines are contracting and economising. Newcastle seems too risky i think.

Newcastle Jet2 flights to New York in time for Christmas
by Michael Brown, The Journal, March 14th 2012

CHRISTMAS shoppers from the North East will again get the chance to buy presents in New York after the return of popular flights. Budget airline Jet2.com is bringing back its festive shopping trips to the Big Apple for a third year after packing out planes in 2011.

The return of the Christmas service has been hailed as a positive step for Newcastle International Airport as it continues to expand services. North East Chamber of Commerce policy advisor Mark Stephenson said “Newcastle Airport has grown exponentially in recent years into one of the finest airports in the United Kingdom. It is great news that Jet2 has recognised that there is an increasing appetite for flights direct to the US.”

Dave Laws, chief executive at Newcastle International Airport, said: “For the third year in a row, Jet2holidays will operate its New York shopping trips from Newcastle, which is fantastic news for the region. This further demonstrates the airline’s success at Newcastle Airport and its investment in the North East.

Anyone wanting more information or to book should visit www.Jet2holidays.com or www.Jet2.com

Other good news for the airport this year has seen Emirates expanding its existing service, while Jet2 has also announced new routes to Dubrovnik in Croatia, Venice and Rome in Italy, Reus in Spain and Bodrum in Turkey. Work is also continuing on a £3.2m extension which will double the size of the baggage screening area and is on schedule to open in time for the busy summer season.
