I must add that English is MOSTLY spoken by teenagers and younger adults.
over 40 and elderly people have usually no or very little knowledge of English but they speak more German and Russian as Rawlee said.

My German is pretty pathetic but it seems I'll get around then.

The problem here is that most people think East Europe is poor and don't see that as places where you should go as a tourist (and they go to sunny places in France, Spain, Greece.. instead)
I think it's safe to say that the Europeans in the west know more about the USA than about the east of Europe.
A friend of mine told me Hungary was pretty nice and okay (but he just drove through it on his way to Romania)

the only bad place WAS Serbia, because of the war..but now it is good.
For the language..my father started learning english a few months ago, because he needs it in his work. I speak english, and some german. My gf speaks english, german, learns russian, and will learn this year polish. you can try multiple languages with young people. Most of them know some basic german and english, although english is dominant. 1000kms of motorways exist, most railways are capable of 120km/h(though we dont have ETCS,so trains go at max 80-85). There are no domestic flights. Hungary is sunny,if you want to sunbath, southern regions even comparable to mediterranean. Lot of things under construction, yearly ~100kms of motorways are built. railways are reconstructed, there were 2 giant bridges inaugurated this year, one more is under construction. Budapest is developing very fast. Once,a few months ago,I could count 10 cranes, just in my district's center. the panorama from the castle hill is "dominated" by cranes.

Language..well,many speak english, bit less speak german, and maybe some russan, among elders. But mostly is hunagrian spoken.
Crime is low, mostly purse snatching and such. you wont get killed. If you dont show off,you wont have problems. If you are from the US,prepare for massive use of mass transit. Not because we dont have cars, but cities are clogged daytime. If you want to know something particular, which you think would differ,or just not sure about it,ask.
Radioactivity is never good for your body, also if it's "natural". In fact, radioactive decay is an entirely natural phenomena. Atomic nucleuses which are unstable (because they are too big, or because they have too few neutrons) will break apart in smaller atoms and emit radioactive particles when doing so (alpha, beta and gamma radiation). They are NEVER good for your body, that's utter nonsense.

you are surrounded by radioactive particles, the planet emits a certain amount of radiation all the timeThats called "background radiation". This is not different from that.

Radiation in SMALL doses actually can be beneficial! I saw an experiment (in a TV programm) where a group of plants were subjected to small dose of radiation, an other group of the same plants were subjected to no radiation and an other group was affected by high dose of radiation. The third group naturally died, the second one grew normally and the first group subjected to small dose of radioactivity grew taller, and looked nicer than the second group.

As far as I know, this amount of radiation in the water is good against rheumatic problems. But we must remember that these waters can be harmful to certain people. For example, the water at Hévíz lake is really good to rheumatic problems and locomotor disorders, but dangerous to people who have heart problems.

I know that I'm surrounded by them. If you don't tune your tv to a channel but to a random frequency you can actually see that background radiation. Concrete walls also "emit" Radon, a radioactive noble gas. When you are only exposed to low doses it doesn't have to be harmful for your body. But that doesn't mean that it has to be healing either! Radiation damages your cells and your DNA. How can that be benificial.

But this is all way off-topic. I'm sorry. Let's return to the subject

Effective or not,we've built a huge tourist industry around this, and many people are sent to such places to be healed, and they are healed(including my father's back). And if its not beneficial, then the thought of of it heals, and a weekend at such places allows the patient to have a good, lazy weekend.

Liberec as a historical city? No, it is one of the modernest cities in the whole republic. True that the oldest building is from the 16th century there but it is also the only such a historical building. Almost all the other were built in the last century (and the recent of course).
