I was a bit worried the top would look strange, but it turned out gorgeous! My favorite 'scraper' in years!

what do you mean? of course there's lot of art deco in downtown, but so are many modern buildings, integrated in the skyline a long time ago. and the new WTC will add even more modernity. the beekman tower has a perfect location, it really stands out and fills the gap between the eastern skyscraper wall of lower manhattan and the verizon building.

I don't know if it's just me but I hope NY stay's a majority Art-Deco city. They basically patented the style themselves, and it shall not be outnumbered!

believe me, very soon the day will come where modern skyscrapers will dominate the city skyline. it's already happening!

but NY can still add some nice "old style" skyscrapers as 99 church street (currently on hold, site is cleared for construction). i'm really excited how this tower will turn out!

Beekman Tower: Now Glistening to the Very Top
Thursday, August 19, 2010
By Matthew Schuerman

Frank Gehry's design for the Beekman Tower in Lower Manhattan elicited a wide range of responses when its designs were circulated two years ago. Among them: Just how will the shiny steel surface fit in among lower Manhattan's stone towers?

While the building is still several months away from completion, the stainless steel siding appeared to have reached the top of the 76 floors this week, giving passersby a chance to assess it.

The building, at 8 Spruce Street, was planned during the real estate boom...and, against all odds, went up during the bust. Construction did stall last year while the developer, Forest City Ratner, renegotiated costs lower -- but work resumed within a few months. The steel structure topped off last November, and shortly afterwards, workers began installing the undulating stainless steel curtain wall.

While the top floors appear to have been covered, there are pieces of some floors that are still bare. The developer says the exterior won't be completely finished for several months.

The 900 apartments in the building are expected to open next spring. The developer abandoned his plan years ago to offer a mix of rentals and condos. Now the building will consist of 100 percent market-rate rentals. The developer won't divulge the asking rents, but Corcoran broker Eric Fleming, who represents similar signature buildings in the financial district, says the one-bedrooms there could fetch $5,000 a month.

The flat side isn't a total loss, either, since there will be some 'buckling' visible from all angles if I'm not mistaken.

Personally I believe that modern designs such as this are very sympathetic to Art Deco. The use of materials is similar to that of those used in traditional Art Deco. It's been a very intelligent way of blending new with old. New Yorkers should be very proud of their new landmark.

Cool, this building benefits from the stereoscopic photo.
(cross your eyes until there are three images. The one in the center will be 3d)

Now us out of towners don't have to imagine how the curves appear in real life. Or at least we don't have to imagine as hard.

I simply cannot agree with this building, apart from the beautiful curves and astounding effort gone into the design of the facade, it is a mess of a building. It is amazing indeed, while completely lacking in aesthetic appeal.

Anyone else look at this one and think that the flat side is the one that looks odd?

Dear friends, I wonder how familiar you are with New York City's Downtown/Lower Manhattan ???

Most of NYC's Art Deco buildings are in Midtown area (Empire State/Chrysler/Rockefeller Center/Original GE Building/Channin/Waldorf Astoria etc.

Lower Manhattan is a wonderful assemblage of many different architectural styles from the Neo-Classical Beaux Arts Municipal Building to the Neo-Gothic Woolworth Building to the Italian Renaissance Federal Reserve Bank.

The Beekman is fine. Some people regret that it blocks the Woolworth from the waterfront view.
