it's great, but what's the logic behind making one side flat, that's even more strange than the beautiful cladding

The flat side is because of needing to cut costs. I love the ripples and curve on this building. Soon to be a New York City landmark.

Other than that, the flat side shows some respect to it's suroundings which is nice.

Here's an article from the NY Times that tells the story,
