Well the New York City Department of Buildings is not an advisory board. Precisely what is filed there must be built.

Absent Spiderman climbing down the side of the building with a tape measure, we'll have to accept to DOB's papers which state that the highest occupied floor is 867 feet.

You can accept the DOB papers. I'll take Vito C's word.

You're quite ingenuous. I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

Structures must be built in strict compliance with applications approved by the New York City DOB. Obviously, you're not from NY and know nothing about the NYC building industry.

I recall people on this board -- who also know nothing about NY -- insisting that heights on record with the DOB equal the absolute tallest point on a tower which is wrong. Case in point: Carnegie 57.

Back to the 900+ foot sculpture!

Yes, I agree this has been a fun thread the last couple of days. Here the measurements taken from an actual elevation drawing dated 10/06/10:

Sidewalk level at Spruce Street entrance (starting point in accordance to CTBUH height criteria) - El. 22.31 ft.

Top of 76th floor slab - El. 849.38 ft. (highest occupiable floor)
Top of roof slab - El. 864.37 ft.
Top of parapet - El. 889.33 ft.
Top of cooling tower - El. 892.33 ft.

Subtract 22.31 from those heights to get the official numbers.

There will be a approx. 20 ft. lightning rod that will bring the tip height to 890 ft. or so.

I still would love to see someone rappel down the side of the building with a tape measure though.

Actually the 867 ft. number from the DOB may not be an error. It was probably taken from a higher starting point at the base to the architectural top. There is a gentle slope on the building site.

The DOB is not wrong. 867 is the highest occupied floor. That being said, it is possible that the mechanicals rise only 25 feet, as you suggest, for a total height of 892 feet.

The confusion arose when Spectre suggested that the total height is 867feet and stated the following:

"Vito C reported the highest floor is 827 feet, the top of the parapet as 867 feet. So the mechanicals rise about 40 feet, not 20."

Yes, it is 892'4" above sea level/city datum. But we don't measure buildings from sea level.

Dumb and ass. You incorrectly stated: "Vito C reported the highest floor is 827 feet, the top of the parapet as 867 feet. So the mechanicals rise about 40 feet, not 20."

Your desired lover, VitoC, does not support that misstatement.

I repeat, Mr. Non-New Yorker, applications approved by the NYC DOB are not "compliance optional." I don't know what the story is in "St. Paul," but in NY, what the DOB approves must be built. The DOB approved a tower whose highest occupied floor is 867 feet, and it was built. That does not include mechanicals. Even by your desired lover's estimate, this tower rises to 892 feet.

Now, can we discuss the bridge in Brooklyn that I'd like to sell you?

Well, I have to bow out of this discussion. I was merely trying to give the correct heights of a major project, and a have little fun with the banter. The above statements are totally uncalled for. Believe what you want my friend, but blueprints don't lie.

My blueprints mirror precisely what's on file with the DOB.

Back to the topic, please.
