At the rate this building is going it shouldn't be long until we find out.
The additional crane sections could be there simply to allow a little extra margin of safety/clearance for the top. I think we're reading a little too much into it.

But what do you define as the top if they are on floor 75 and there are only supposed to be 76 floors?

From this render, the 76th (top) floor appears to be an oversized floor, so most likely it's a mechanical floor.

First Ratner changed this project from luxury condominiums to apartments, then he smoothed out the entire south wall, and lastly he threatened to finish the tower at 38 floors unless the construction companies and unions renegotiated. So given that sort of track record, he is very unlikely to waste millions on more floors or a ornamental crown. I'm not going to call Ratner a cheapskate as many others have, it's not his fault the economy went to shit. But extra floors or a crown seems incredibly unlikely.

I would agree with you on the unpredictability of this project, but I don't agree that that does not mean there could not be more floors added on. Top out in December....that's at least another month away. Three more crane parts, I don't know. You tell me, it speaks for itself. But I guess we'll see soon enough. The top floor is larger, but some renders seem to suggest the two floors below that are slightly larger as well.

The paperwork filed at DoB has this listed at 74-76 floors, 867-876 ft high. If Ratner was to add a bunch more floors he'd have to file for the permits. He hasn't. So any additional floors is just wishfull thinking. Mechanical floors always take much longer to construct. So that's why I think we're seeing top out in December.

Again, I think the extra crane sections are just for extra clearance for the boom.

Well, unless he found a buyer(s) for a floor higher than 76 and someone shelled out big bucks for it. Always possible, to roof this will be the tallest building in Manhattan.

Those extra tall windows on top could easily be used as a crown all theyd have to do is put lights in them no extra anything needed. I hope they also have some lighting on the setbacks but who knows, the top windows should be lit minimum.

as i mentioned before, beekman will crack the 900ft (see also wired new york, SSP infos), but it's highly unlikely this tower will become a supertall. nevertheless, >900ft is a nice height for NYC.

Staight from NY DoB website, new permit issued 11/4/2009.

ob No: 120198437 Job Type / App No.: ALT2 Fee: STANDARD
Permit No: 120198437-01-EW-OT Issued: Expires:
Seq. No.: 01 Filing Date: 11/05/2009 INITIAL Status: IN PROCESS
Work: Proposed Job Start: 11/05/2009 Work Approved: 11/04/2009
ALTERATION TYPE 2 - SHORING
SHORING TO SUPPORT FORMWORK ON 76TH FLOOR, ROOF, BULKHEAD ROOF & UPPER BULKHEAD ROOF DURING NEW BUILDING CONSTRUCTION (104293774-NB).

Zoning: N/A Special District: N/A
Use: J-2 - RESIDENTIAL APT HOUSE No. Dwellings: 890 Stories: 76 Total Floor Area: N/A Landmark: N/A
Site Fill: NOT APPLICABLE
Review is requested under Building Code: 2008

I don't think this definitively answers our questions, but it looks like we'll see the roof on top of the 76th floor, then a bulkhead roof and an upper bulkhead roof. I wouldn't go so far to say two extra roofs qualifies as two extra floors. Looks like just two extra roofs??? That should give the building a little extra height I suppose. Hmmm, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, that's negative side of it...And positive side is that it's safer...Through there's a very small chance that something will fall and break the cladding..But you never know...
