I'd define the Beekman as one of the new landmark of Manhattan.
Great piece of architecture, though it has been modified since the first rendering.

Moreover, in NY -- unlike most US cities -- no one cares if their building is 875feet or 900 feet. There's no sense of pride in the height of one's building.
Tell that to the builders of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.

well, shanghai is definitely building tall. what do you say about that?

EDIT: would be cool, of beekman exceeds the 900ft mark.

A poster on WNY reports he talked to the construction guys, says they only have the water tower and a few small things left to do. Hmmm. Maybe the extra rebar is to support a row of the curtainwall in a sort of crown/parapet to hide the water tower and other mechanicals? Lord knows this beauty doesn't need a 25 foot tall water tower sticking out on top. Bleh!

Neither city dwells on height; but you are probably correct that input from neighborhood groups makes it a little harder to build tall in NYC today than in Chicago (eg the Nouvel).

Great cities like NYC stand on their own merits - it isn't necessary to raise them up on this forum by putting down other cities like Chicago & Atlanta.

^ Maybe you guys can get a room?

This Gehry quote is an interesting reminder of his continuing fascination with fabric and sculpture, and of his synergistic approach to design:

"I found out that if I moved the bay window at each floor, I could get these softer, drawn images".....That undulation is, he said, inspired by Bernini folds, the folds on the clothing of marble sculptures carved in the 17th century. http://www.observer.com/2009/slidesh...98/bay-windows

^ There's a fresh angle! Slam/dunk on the atmosphere too - you can see the city's breath.

I just can't get over how great this tower looks on the skyline.

TY back to topic please.

The possibility of extra floors, while not confirmed in any way yet, is exciting. Wouldn't it be great to get some kind of secret crown??? I know I would be stoked.

Stoked? I've only heard people from Malibu and La Jolla say stoked!

On topic now, this is an amazing tower. It adds a certain panache to the Lower Manhattan skyline. I doubt there'll be a secret crown or spire added, but who cares? You still get a Gehry masterpiece!

Just saying...it would be a great surprise to see something like that...PLUS...I am all about sticking it to local NIMBYS. The day this project resumed construction I was down on Spruce street taking pictures and commenting to residents how cool it was going to be to see this tower rise. So to see even more get built...hey adding injury to insult to these guys is nothing short of total satisfaction. Schadenfruede is what they call it.

I would only use the word stoked on SSC.
