Never heard of that. But in Germany Berlin is considered as a rather ugly city, thanks to all the commieblocks in the eastern part.
And who says that there will be a lot of highrises soon, doesn't know anything about the Berlin economy: The city is bankrupt, unemployment rates are high and functions, which are usually to be found in a capital, are distributed among several german cities (for example for media there are a couple more important german cities than Berlin: Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt)

Great photos. Berlin is nice.

PS: I would love to see the Neptune fountain moved from its current location to someplace on or near the Unterlinden where it would be more prominent.

Well the fountain used to be near Unter den Linden on the Museum Island. The fountain was removed from its original location at the Schlossplatz in 1951, when the former Berliner Stadtschloss there was demolished.

The old location at the Stadt Schloss

That's one of the most beautiful fountains in the world. Museum Island would be a better location than where it currently sits, but the Unterlinden would be even better. It would be nice to play it off of the Brandenberg Gate.

P.S.: Is the old building shown in your photo from Museum Island still standing. I fear that it is not, as I don't recall it during my one trip to Berlin.

P.P.S.: I just re-read your post and note that that building was demolished? Why was it? Was the hideous post-WWII box on Museum Island built on the site of this gem?

LloydGeorge, it was the Stadtschloss (City Palace), the dwelling of the german emperor. It was heavily damaged in WW2 and afterwards ultimately destroyed by the socialist east-german government who then built their Palast der Republik (Palace of the Republic) there. Currently this building is being dismantled and it is planned to reconstruct the Stadtschloss there.

Thanks. The Palast der Republik is the hideous building to which I referred. I've heard that there was opposition to razing it. I assume that notwithstanding the opposition, it will come down. I look forward to seeing the recreated Stadtschloss; it looked beautiful.

That building is the Stadtschloss (the royal city palace of Berlin).
After the war it could have been restored but GDR's communist regime saw the Stadtschloss as a symbol of Prussian militarism.
In 1976 the regime of Erich Honnecker built a large modernist building, the Palast der Republik (Palace of the Republic) which occupied most of the site of the former Stadtschloss. Just prior to German reunification in October 1990 this building was found to be contaminated with asbestos and was closed to the public. In November 2003, the German federal government decided to demolish the building and rebuild the old Stadtschloss.
Demolition started in February 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in mid 2007.

You can read everything about it in this hugh SCC Thread:
