Outstanding pictures of Europe's most unusual and ambiguous capital! Thank you very much. Your pics are full of atmosphere Berlin's current overcapacities can be observed almost everywhere throughout the city - even on central Potsdamer Platz where many bars and restaurants stay empty: http://i35.************/5jwbat.jpg

Why do you post pics of the bad, most desolate buildings/areas?

Nice pics, again!

@Darryl: Berlin is a rather run-down and shabby but charming place..... If you don't like trash you'll hardly ever like Berlin

I think these areas are exactly what gives Berlin its character. Besides, most European cities have plenty of areas like this, it just so happens that Berlin has more.

If you knew Berlin you'd know that one point that Bahnsteig posted is Kotti (Kottbusser Tor) a very famous, yet shabby, section of Kreuzberg. Or at least the building looks like its from there .

And why not? This is a thread, not a tourist promotion board. This is as much a part of Berlin as the beautiful tidy parts are!

I do know Berlin. I have been there five times. I know these areas exist, but I wouldn't want to photograph them.

So what? This is true about every city. Does Bahnsteig post pics of the ugly, run-down areas of his native Vienna? Why do we want to look at abandoned buildings with grafitti all over them? What is interesting about that? I can see that anywhere.

...and twice now it's been mentioned that posting nice pics is comparable to being a tourism or promotion advertisement. Umm...... is that not what is done in just about every single thread in this forum?? Look at all of the threads about other cities. Are the pics taken in their worst areas? Or does this "non-tourist board" rule only apply to Berlin and Detroit?

Darryl, no one forces you to look at these threads. I suggest you pic up your cam and show us how it's done.

I think many will agree with me that seeing a city's unattractive or worst areas is as fun as watching the nicer ones. It shows that the "other" city is not perfect. Some take pleasure in seeing the other person's city's bad parts because it makes them feel good about "their" city, whether it's the city they live in or their favorite city. In my case, I really, really like Berlin and can't wait to return this November for a visit. So seeing its bad parts is like a cool preview of what to expect--the bad like the good. Plus, most of us here love a good abandoned warehouse district or graffiti, etc. Without it, the city is a bit sterile.

Minatu ku has done a great job for example showing the "real" Paris in his Paris...my city thread. People have commented well on his representation of the good parts and the bad parts of that city.

I also like seeing the nitty gritties, it just shows you that cities are actually live places with people, not just museum artifacts.
