It's just a bonus when it's sunny in the mountains.

Rain makes mountains look even more impressive in a way, just so different to when it's clear. It also keeps the people indoors which makes you feel like you're the only person for miles and miles. And the waterfalls are bigger.

I'm just describing my perfect day in the Lake District or Highlands of Scotland. Or Austria when I finally get there!

I would assume you'd appreciate the roman/Italian parts of Switzerland better. Austria is more convenient as it's flatter. Switzerland is like the Lake District, yet with far steeper valleys and mountain ranges.

I just want to go somewhere with mountains where the people speak German - a mild obsession of mine.

How is Austria "flatter"? I've been to Leukerbad in the German-speaking part of Switzerland on a day trip from Chamonix. I soooooo want to go back to the Alps.

Austria's Tirol mountain range is in the south-west. Yet apart from that area, Austria is flatter.

No worry! Switzerland's main tongue is German, or to be correct schwyzerdütsch. Nothing to do with Dutch. Just more proof of the idiocy of the word Dutch as it exists in the English language.

Butterfield, you should come to America. Here in Tennessee we have mountains and good weather and we obviously speak English (but it's a little different so that makes it kind of exotic, right?). One of the days I'm really, honestly going to post my photos of the mountains. Who knows when though? I'm a busy (read: lazy) girl.

Well Kara, it's been one of my ambitions for years now to see some American mountains! When me and my brother visited New York in 2003 I was desperate to drive somewhere to see at least a few hills in the countryside but as it turned out we were unable to rent a car so we were a bit stuck in the city.

I've actually looked at the mountains of Tennessee in the past, around the area where the infamous Dollywood is! It does look nice round there though. I'm no mountain climber as such, I just love the scenery and the beautiful walks.

Funny you mentioned Dollywood. As I was just telling a friend, Dolly Parton is giving a concert at the minor league baseball stadium about five minutes from my house in a few days.

disgusting, muggy, sticky, still, cloudy, miserable weather. can't sleep - sweating my nads off. who wants a fight?

edit: according to the bbc it'll be 23 tomorrow in london, then 18 on saturday, 13 on monday, and 13 on tuesday. so from unseasonably warm and stuffy to actually quite cold for the time of year. interesting. not as interesting as pornography though.

and in (HMP) sydney, "'straya", where they're just about to enter winter, the forecast is for crisp, chilly sunny days, with temperatures only getting as high as the low twenties celcius this weekend - let's just hope they remember to wrap up warm and throw a few extra blankets on the bed.

seriously, no one up for that fight?

Much more comfortable now though but i suppose we have to pay for it with the much cooler days. Especially when the rest of eastern Europe is having a heatwave. By Wednesday Helsinki is forecast 25 and Moscow a scorching 38. Back home we could struggle to get out of single figures tomorrow.

We've got some mammatus clouds here at the moment. Very impressive and spooky.

I took some pictures. It really was a beautiful sight and they are quite rare to see around my area. Right now, in the distance, is an absolutely massive cumulonimbus cloud as well but it is too far to get something good out of it.

Anyway, here are the pictures, some have been 'enhanced' using Picasa to give them that eerie effect. I'll separate the two lots so you can tell the difference.

Original photographs:

Enhanced versions (very noisy):

Beautiful clouds, eh?

If I ever saw clouds like that in real life I would dig a hole in the ground and hide in it until they pass.

Well, apparently, they usually form before a tornado forms, so maybe digging a hole is the best idea. But they also form for no known reason at all.
