An interesting update. In addition to winning gold award for Future Chinese Buildings at The MIPIM Asia event on Hong Kong in 2011, the Quarry Hotel has been awarded Top prize as the Best International Hotel Architecture at the 2013 International Property Awards in London UK. We are quite thrilled by this...

Also quite important issue. Lot of the description of the hotel on the web refers to the early concept done with Atkins... This information is now out of date as the design has considerably moved on due to the detailed design etc... Although the principles are there, the facts have now changed. As Atkins are no longer involved in any of the aspect of the design, You can follow us to have the correct upto date information.

Atkins has won an international design competition to design a five-star resort hotel set within a beautiful water-filled quarry in the Songjiang district close to Shanghai in China. Its stunning concept designs inspired by the natural water and landscape features of the quarry captured the imagination of judges to quash competition from two other international firms. The innovative design of the 400-bed resort hotel stands two levels higher than the rock face of the 100 metre deep quarry and includes underwater public areas and guestrooms. It will incorporate conference facilities for up to 1,000 people, a banqueting centre, restaurants, cafés and sports facilities. Sustainability is integral to the design ranging from using green roofing for the structures above the ground level to geothermal energy extraction. An aquatic theme runs through the design both visually and functionally. Two underwater levels will house a restaurant and guestrooms facing a ten-metre deep aquarium. The lowest level of the hotel will contain a leisure complex with a swimming pool and water-based sports. An extreme sports centre for activities such as rock climbing and bungee jumping will be cantilevered over the quarry and accessed by special lifts from the water level of the hotel.

Hi Atkins won this competition in 2006 I was the concept designer and project director and has been in that role until I left in 2012 to set up my own Studio. Developer Shimao discontinued the design contract with Atkins - Both the Building and Landscape and signed contract with my company to complete the design and oversee the construction. The Design has undergone considerable changes and developments since the article above - as My previous company have no information about the further design they keep using the outdated information from the concept design stage. The hotel has 370 rooms now and only 1 underwater level.

Also the aquarium us 5 m not 10 m deep, there is no geothermal extraction planned now and no extreme sorry centre cantilevered over the quarry, however there will be a 'sky walk' similar to that in the Grand Canyon. I am not sure why the person above has put in the outdated description ...

extreme sport centre... Not sorry centre... Btw of course My previous company has the legal right to claim they designed the hotel and won the competition... But the reality is that they do not have anyone left either in UK or China who has worked on the project...

Happy Chinese New Year to everyone... Facade design is progressing with Hyder working with us as the facade consultant. Also the interior design and external lighting is moving forward. BIM exercise was done highlighting some structure/MEP clashes but nothing that cannot be sorted out. Better now then during the construction... Looking forward to seeing the steel structure coming out of the ground in the spring...http://See new construction images o...ongjiangquarry

That's hardly random

Maybe it's an ironic hipster name: "Hotel in 65m Deep Quarry"

Awesome. I picked the project up online. That is an awesome idea. Me, myself was thinking for a long time about when a mountain hotel would happen. That day is finally there!

Quote:

Now that is a groundbreaking design: The lavish £345million five-star CAVE hotel being built in an abandoned Chinese quarry
  1. Two of the hotel's 19 storeys will be built underwater and will feature an aquarium with glass walls
  2. The other 17 storeys will be built inside a cave at the base of the Tianmenshan Mountain
  3. The British design firm behind the plans claim the roof of the £345-million hotel will sit just 15 metres above ground

Construction has begun on a luxury five-star hotel being built INSIDE a 100-metre deep, water-filled abandoned quarry in China at the base of the Tianmenshan Mountain.
The £345million cave hotel in the Songjiang District has been designed by British-based firm Atkins and will have 380 rooms over 19 storeys - two of which will be underwater.
The rest of the InterContinental Shimao hotel will be built into the mountainous landscape and guests will be able to do watersports on the lake and use the nearby cliffs for rock-climbing and bungee jumping.
It is expected to take around three years to build and guests could be staying in the resort by 2015 - with rooms likely to cost around £200 a night.

The two underwater floors will have an aquarium with glass walls that look out onto an underwater restaurant and guest rooms.
A swimming pool and a sports centre will also be built inside the hotel as well as several restaurants, a banqueting hall and conference rooms for business meetings.

Although the guest rooms will vary in size, they are expected to start from around £200 a night.
Atkins has designed the structure to blend in with the landscape using an eco-friendly green roof planted with various trees.

The rest of the InterContinental Shimao hotel will be built into the mountainous landscape and guests will be able to do watersports on the lake and use the nearby cliffs for rock-climbing and bungee jumping.

How the current abandoned quarry in Shanghai looks. The hotel has been designed by British firm Adkins to make sure it blends in with the landscape. It will be fitted with an eco-friendly roof and will use natural, nearby resources to power the hotel

Li Xuyang, a senior manager for Shimao Group told Shortlist: 'Two stories will be built underwater, 17 will be within the cave and two more will be above ground.
'The roof of the hotel will only be 15 m above the cave.
'The idea was to take advantage of this unique land form and to create a garden growing in the air.
People could view the hundred-meter high waterfall from their room window.
'The hotel is part of the larger project to build Shimao Shanghai Wonderland, a large-scale theme park.'

Update January 2015. Construction progressing. Slowly but surely... The cliff face behind the quarry needs stabilizing and strengthening. This is now about 1/2 finished. Deep anchors are being drilled at 2mx2m centres all the way up for the full length of the hotel..this is the main cause of the delay. Interior design and Mock ups of the guest rooms are almost finished. The landscape design by US company BAM is also progressing well. Concept for both the ground level and the bottom of the quarry agreed. The biggest issue was the location of the pump house- noise and vibration being the most difficult to solve. National Geographic filming is ongoing. We were shooting in October with interviews on site. We at JADE are finalizing the facades for the swimming pool and generally coordinating the ID and landscape with the architecture. The steel structure has been mocked up on site and we are expecting it will start following the completion of the cliff strengthening probably in March/April. Then we shall see some fast progress. Quite exciting. You can follow the progress with photos posted quite frequently on twitter [email protected] Martin Jochmanwww.jade-quarry.com
