well, I will be happy if this is eventually built. I would not like to count on the scheduled open date they released at this early stage.

it's an abandoned quarry not a waterfall landmark.

Any recent news on this project? Probably one of the most unique hotels in the world if it ever gets built.

I would like to know more about this project's development status. Isn't this the one that is supposed to be called "Songjiang Hotel"?

I went to the site yesterday, stepped down to the water level, and found no progress. However, the gatekeeper told me that the project was to be restarted.

I think they need to write/re-write their building codes before this project can get the go ahead.

Some years ago, when they were supposed to start, they pumped out all the water from the site - now all the water is back again. Does it mean that they will pump it out again ?

no progress on this project at all.

there are several abandoned quarries in that area. a smaller one has been converted into a tourist spot within a botanic garden

I surely hope they could start this project asap, but looks like it is currently in the middle of nowhere, maybe they'll have to develop the whole region to make it economically feasible..

A few years ago, British engineering firm Atkins won the rights to design an extravagant hotel deep within a 100-metre pit in Shanghai's Songjiang District near the base of Tianmashan Mountain.

Construction on the Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland finally commenced last month, and the hotel is scheduled to open in late 2014 to early 2015.

The complex is part of a larger 428,000 square-meter theme park.

The hotel will have a total of 19 floors — three of which will be above ground and the remaining 16 extending into the bottom of the pit. It will hold about 380 rooms which are expected to start at about RMB2,000 (US$320) per night. The building will also feature an underwater restaurant.

Shanghai Shimao Property Group has so far invested RMB3.5 million (US$555 million) into the entire Shanghai Shimao Wonderland site.
