In my opinion I actually like the deisgn for the cinema. Firstly i like that fact that they actually went with the peoples choice for an oval design. Secondly I think it compliments the design of the pool quite well and will be a great addtion to the area. However, i do still agree with dinp, a taller building may have been a better solution for the area.

Maybe a solution like this would have been nicer, Southampton Cinema

If you've noticed your street getting darker recently, watch this... (I advise you have a stiff drink at the ready)

Cannot put into words just how angry this makes me.

Its not just that they have turned the lights out, its the wrong ones they are turning off.

There are 3 lights in my stretch of houses. Mine is the middle one. That has been turned off yet one at the end of the street that has no access to anyone and is a dead end is on.??

Sooner or later someone in Corby will get mugged, raped, injured and they will go straight to court against the county council.!

Since european law have something to say about everything, what do they have to say about this.?

Some of my family from Scotland visited Corby over the weekend, having not been here for several years. They were very impressed with the changes - notably the rail station, the cube, the pool and the shopping centre... to the point where they're thinking of moving here.

Was in the Trespass shop earlier, seemed to be good value. After about 400 years, Boots have FINALLY replaced their signs! The old ones must have been the oldest in their chain of stores.

And our bid to be a city has been delivered:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...shire-13573600

Honestly can't see us winning, but how pissed off will MK (and all the other worthy candidates) be if we do!?

Obviously I don't speak for many but I for one would be more happy to lose to Corby than I would a lot of other places... speaking of which, have Northampton submitted a bid this time? Every article I see about it makes no mention of them...

There's a thread about the 2012 candidates and someone from Northampton is on there, berating the fact that they haven't. Kind of proves your point about them lacking civic pride Tom

I read somewhere on a Northampton sporting club forum that it's a done deal and Northampton has it in the bag, hence no expensive major city status flag waving bid required, which makes sense as every other previous bid the favorites came nowhere and so it probably will be this time round. even if this is not the case, most people in Northampton are quite happy with the towns standing and are not bothered if it's a city or town, they do care that an immediate multi million investment on the current town centre is a must and our sporting clubs should be allowed to redevelop their stadiums to allow growth. Believe me the locals have civic pride and will get what they want.

Having visited Corby many times over three decades I must say i was surprised by the vibrant town centre, with decent pubs and resturant's, lots of young families and a friendly feel to place. Love hearing the Scots accents, a lot softer than the times I used to play football over their in the early eighties.

Where are these decent pubs you speak of?!?
That's one of the things we're still lacking really

Well then, what do people think of this?

Quote:
From BBC News

Corby council says town centre 'to be sold'

Corby town centre is to be sold by its owner, Land Securities, according to the chief executive of Corby Borough Council.

Chris Mallender, who met with Land Securities earlier, said the property company "feels it's now time to hand over to somebody else".

The 750,000 sq ft (69,677 sq m) of retail and office space is expected to be sold for £72m, said Mr Mallender.

A Land Securities spokeswoman described the sale as "speculation".

The council's deputy leader, Mark Pengelley, also attended the meeting and said the company will be leaving the town "in very good shape".

He added that he is looking forward to a new owner bringing more investment to the town.

Land Securities acquired the town centre when it bought the previous owners, Tops Estates, in 2005.

They regenerated town centre shops by building the £40m Willow Place two years later.

Mr Mallender told BBC Radio Northampton that they now want phase two of the redevelopment to attract a department store, "probably Debenhams or Marks and Spencer".

He hopes the council will be able to invest in the town centre.

"I have already spoken to two developers who are interested in exploring further working with the borough council," he added.
This was also reported in Property Week yesterday

Quote:
Land Securities is looking to sell its 750,000 sq ft Corby Town centre scheme for around £72m, reflecting a yield of around 7.5%.

The centre comprises Willow Place, which Land Securities completed in 2007, the Oasis Retail Park and the traditional town centre high street retail pitch.

Land Securities is thought to be selling the scheme to enable it to recycle capital into other developments. It acquired the retail scheme in 2005 through its purchase of Tops Estates.

Savills have been appointed to market the scheme.

The 175,000 sq ft Willow Place shopping centre, which Land Securities opened in 2007, is anchored by Primark and TK Maxx.

Land Securities has outline planning consent for a £100m second phase of development in Corby called Evolution Corby, but put the redevelopment on hold in 2010.

Hmmm. A consequence of the supermarket feud with the council perhaps?

Guess there won't be much money invested into the town centre for a while then...

Hang on I'm confused, who are Land Securities and what did they do? I've heard their name thrown around in good and bad lights over the history of this thread...

They own the majority of the town centre, and a lot of other shopping centres in the UK. they've had a big part to play in the improvements made in the town centre over the last 5 years.

That's what I was thinking, however it is probably their own fault for dragging their heels with their own supermarket plans when the deadline came up. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I can only see this as being a negative move for the town centre. The development has been impressive in the past 5 years.
