Thank you both for these kind words. I've been to Poland twice and liked it better than when I visited "western" countries, such as Italy or Austria.

I especially liked the story about the small Ukrainian flag and not being Soviet Union.

First of all, most Ukraine is still in a very difficult situation right now, so the people's expressions reflect that.

But I also think that it's pretty common for life in large cities. I live in Toronto, and I often visit New York (Brooklyn, Manhattan), and many people look very unhappy as well. I think they're just hardworking people, from a long day of work.

Even in Lviv though, if you walk around the centre, in places were people meet (bars, restaurants, shops), people seem much happier. It's almost like they're sad when they're alone, but when they meet up with others (friends, etc), they're much happier. It makes sense, doesn't it?

I ask, cause I've heard that some problems appeared when they started construction of metro in Lviv during Soviet times. How does it look???
dziękuję/djakuje
Most of the centre is renovated, or under the process of renovation as we speak. Unfortunately, farther away from the centre, most streets are not renovated. Although, you should find everything you want to see in the centre, so there is no need to go into the outskirts.

There were plans to construct subways in Lviv, but when they saw the situation, the project was put on hold. I don't believe they ever started anything, beyond the planning stages. Lviv has underground rivers, and ancient catacombs which wouldn't allow a path for a subway line. A century or so ago, the Opera Theatre shifted a few metres downward, because there was an underground river under it that the architector didn't know about. The Theatre is now stable, but they wouldn't want to risk anything like that again. Unfortunately, the architector killed himself when her heard the news of the Opera sinking.

There are supposedly a magnetic train system being planned, but I haven't heard anything about it recently.

The picture looked very similar to Paris, and Paris has a very distinct style.
