Weekend in San Diego
I don't know if anyone has been down to SD in a while, but I just had to post to say how amazed I was with the area. Most of the city is still suburban crap, but their downtown is almost unbelievalbe. I've been to a lot of the US and many places internationally as well, but I've never been anywhere that had so many bars/night clubs/restaurants in one neighborhood as the Gaslamp Quarter. Then you've got Petco Park next door and 2 train lines that run through downtown. These same trains also connect you to the airport, little italy, Qualcomm Stadium, and SDSU. Speaking of Qualcomm, I went to the Charger's game on Sunday, and I've never seen so many people use transit to get to a sporting event. Granted I've nvever been to a Yankees or Red Sox game, but every train that pulled into the station before the game just had pepole pouring out and after the game, the line to get onto a train was as long as Space Mountain at Disneyland. Seriously, atleast half an hour to catch a train. Then theres the amount of urban housing and conversion that is going on downtown. There are way more new buildings being put up in downtown SD than downtown LA. Also, there is a lot of renewal to delapidated structures in the area. Theyve also got not only one, but 2 grocery stores downtown to cater to the locals. There real estate is also probably at 75% of the cost relative to LA.
I also have a few concerns with SD. First, is that much like my parents, many of the new homeowners downtown are just vacationers that are coming to visit on the weekends (my dad was saying he thinks its about 60/40residents to vacationers). This makes downtown SD an extremely speculative market. This also means that outside of the tourists, which there are many of, the locals coming to hang out downtown are driving in, even with a very efficient and productive rail system. Also, there is a ridiculous amount of parking down there. Most of it is hidden very well, but my parents building has a cavernous 3 level subterranean lot with mostly empty spots. Even though its dissapointing that LA is much farther behind with its downtown redevelopment, I think LA is being much smarter by getting the residents downtown before the entertainment. I think that this will be much better for a longterm sustainable neighborhood. I was also dissapointed that outside of downtown, theres not much to do for young people in SD. There Pacific Beach, which also has a lot of bars, but that leaves only 2 places to get your party on. It's like if you were only to be able to go to Santa Monica and Hermose Beach to party. Even though the only difference between the OC and San Diego is a lively urban core, the planners down there were able to make sure that visitors have no reason to leave their perfect downtown. There is plenty to do there to keep a visitor busy for many days. I can totally see why domestic and foreign tourists alike end up prefering SD to LA on their trips through Southern California. I think that LA has way more to offer for young people and urbanites, but I guess in conclusion, I'm really glad that LA was able to snag SD's former chief planner for their own. We really have no way to go but up from here. |

I went to SoCal recently. I saw very little of SD, but I did manage to see the skyline. I would've loved to see more.
I read your comment about most of SD being suburban. Although this is correct, it is true of most North American cities. It's just that alot of it's new, so we need time to let it settle in. Maybe we could plant a few more trees in the 'burbs, which would help. Also, restoring some of San Diego's older buildings to their former glory would help, as well as building new buildings in old styles.

The Gas Lamp quarter is indeed a great place to enjoy a night on the town in SD....but sorry to say, it still aint Hollywood! (or maybe the Gas Lamp quarter doesn't want to be like Hollywood, eh why not?)..lol

downtown san diego reminds me more and more of downtown long beach. give long beach 3-5 years and it will look like it even more with all the development going on. Even now with the growing nightlife, pine ave gets packed on weekend nights, it reminds me a lot of the gaslamp quarter in s.d
