Any news on the BMU's for the spire? It feels a bit quiet up there these days.

It does indeed seem quiet! It has been extremely windy for the past couple of weeks, so I don't think they have been able to operate the crane. However, I did notice it working today. Let's hope for some still weather.

The river trip for Civil Engineering students which I attended last wednesday was hosting 4 engineers. One of them was involved in this project, so I asked her how they're going to disassemble the crane which is on top right now - she said they will put one little crane on the top of the Shard construction which will do the job. After it finish that, another crane will be assembled to remove the crane that removed the crane which we can see at the moment. It won't go forever obviously the last crane will stay there forever and will be used to clean the windows and to some repairs.
So I was wondering if that's the crane she was talking about

The item in the picture is 1 of 4 building maintenance units (BMU) at level 75, these are also referred to as window cleaning units. The crane the student engineer was talking about is a large BMU which sits at level 87 which will be used to dismantle the crane that dismantles the crane. This BMU is permanent and will be visible from the East when the glass is completed due to the Easten face terminating at a lower level to the other faces.

Once the BMUs and chillers are fitted the steel will progress.

Essentially, the big crane that sticks out to for the cleaners cradle or lift up new machinery if the equipment is replaced/upgraded.

Here are the Gherkin's BMUs.

Great photo chest, the removal of the old station canopy has done wonders in opening up the space. And you can really see a difference in where they have been testing the window cleaning rig!
