Of course it's real - he paid good money for it!

It was pretty poor tbh... too much focus was placed on how many Olympic pools worth of concrete went into it, too much 'drama' resulting from old men looking at wind speed charts and 'Western Europe' was mentioned far too many times. I would have liked to seen more about the meeting between Sellar and Renzo Piano, the design evolution of the tower, the planning departments, English Heritage... that would make for a much better story than how many double decker blue whales worth of rebar go into each floor of western Europe's (but not Europe's) tallest skyscraper. There was about a 5 second quote from the project architect... that was it.

He's an interesting chap. Old school wheeler dealer, no offence.
He's an old school wheeler dealer to whom this forum owes a huge debt of thanks.

Indeed, I recently emailed Sellar regarding a potential charity event, not sure if I will get a reply. The Shard makes the kind of statement I am after.

It wasn't a criticism, he seems to have made an awful lot of money in the rag trade, speaks like a used car salesman and uses a hair dye called "Midnight in Marrakesh":

Quote:
Sellar got his first taste for business in the markets of Petticoat Lane in the 1960s. His father had turned the family home in Southgate, north London into a mini glove-making factory. "A batch of gloves was rejected by one store and a friend suggested he took a stall in Petticoat Lane. That was the start of it."

FAQ: The red things on The Shard are the blind boxes. The blinds themselves are grey.

The Shard's observation deck opens in Feb 2013: http://the-shard.com/the-view-from-the-shard

Yes the top is finished and will remain open to the elements. The exterior is (pretty much) complete.
