Shard construction to begin in March Published: 22 January 2009 17:17 Author: Nick Whitten More by this Author Last Updated: 23 January 2009 08:22 Reader Responses Construction of Europe's tallest building the Shard will begin in March according to developer's Sellar Property Group. Demolition of the old Southwark towers is now virtually complete and piling work will be carried out between now and March. Contractor Mace will begin construction work at the London Bridge site in March with completion expected in the second quarter of 2012. The 310 metre high building - roughly the same height as New York's Chrysler Building – will become the tallest in Europe. A Sellar Property Group spokesman said: "The contractor has been appointed and the funding is all in place. "We hope to start construction in March with the expectation of completing the project in the second quarter of 2012." In December Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company agreed to inject cash into the project that has been dogged by rumours that it would never be built. The developer of London Bridge's Shard tower is reported to have agreed a price of about £425 million for the scheme with Mace. The sum is a saving of about £10 million on the fixed-price bid that Mace submitted two months ago, but is still about £75 million above the original estimate of £350 million.

Just looking at the webcams, they are incredicbly busy on the site.
It says in that article from January 25th that they are to do piling from now until March, that seems impossible! |

All those fun thread where we all likes to stick the boot in just disapeared.
Oh well.. A question. Shard starts in march. Cores or steel exos go up at about a storey a week? So by the end of the summer there'll be a very visible say 30/40 stories high protrusion on the south bank? Is that how its gonna work? Cheers d

I would think that that schedule has slipped by about 2 months, They may well be able to start some form of construction in March, but we are still a week or 2 away from piling.
Them 300 piles at a rate of about 6 day, gives you about 45 days for piling, which takes you in to May.

I'm pretty sure the Hotel operators are really *really* going to want to be up and running as early in 2012 as possible. Not just because of the Olympics but also because that year it's also Queenie's Diamond Jubilee - remember how big her Golden one was in 2002? I would expect something similar for 2012 - with concerts etc. and rich Celebs needing to stay somewhere.

Nevertheless interesting question - I don't think we have an exact construction schedule yet for the Shard, but to give you a rough idea this is the one from Heron: http://www.planning.cityoflondon.gov...&pageCount=129 As one can see Heron might make it to 30/40 stories by late summer this year. But it finished demolition already around the end of 2007! So as a rough guess I would say mid 2010 for the progress you asked about. The shard construction video reposted a few pages ago would also indicate that that progress is taking about half of the remaining time till external completion which should be by end of 2011 if it's fully completed by mid 2012 Anybody else with more info on how the construction schedule for the Shard might compare to Herons? The Shard has a concrete core, apart from the upper levels, so the speed at which the forming takes place will quicken as the floors get smaller.
From about 8 days per floor at lower levels to 4 for the higher ones. To give you some idea Burg Dubai was rising by a floor every 4 days at lower levels, and then a floor every 2 day as the size of the floors reduced. I'm not saying this will happen with the Shard, as they worked 24 hours a day on Burg Dubai. Heron is all steel, and this takes slightly longer to erect.

The whole structure will be flown in and lowered by a fleet of helicopters overnight.

and funnily as the pictures released by an steel engineer working on the project proved for an afternoon (after that he had to withdraw them for confidentiality issues) this can really be said for Heron tower. The whole steel structure could indeed be seen sitting in a field and waiting to be brought to London

lol it would be funnier, if it was bought on a hypermassive barge standing upright.
