It's one of the holes where they will get rid of the dirt as the basement excavation continues.

Main cam working again.

4 booms up! Dance of the tower cranes. Hurrah. Didn't really notice the steelwork crawling its way around the station side of the site.

How do they stop the booms colliding. Is there a degree of computer control between them or do they simply not reach each other?

photos from a dull wintery day ...

I'm not convinced that the grey steel structure, that overlaps the large white beams, is temporary. It looks to me that there may be a glass curtain wall that is exterior, at this level, to the main supporting beams. Anyone think otherwise? (Having looked at the renders - maybe not

New steel ... seriously strong looking stuff

Grey steel works is temporary,it's the loading gantry, and external costrucion lift platform, It's not too different tothe one they have at HERON, but that one is mostly covered, and because of the size of this building it's bigger.
It will, when it's finished go over to the other side of the road to allow materials and steel to be safely unloaded and lifted skywards

You answered your own question there. It's because it overlaps, in between the white steel, is how you can tell it's temporary. Look carefully at your own pics (nice, by the way) at no point does the temporary steel touch the other beams, they're also not bolted to them either.

Evening shot showing the new white steel beams poking through the new tower crane (not literally!) on the right of the shot:

I had been wondering myself as it's turning into something relatively substantial.

However, in addition to the two replies above, if you go to http://www.shardlondonbridge.com/ and click on Visualisation and then Other you can see a model of the scheme, where the columns in question are unencumbered by other structure at ground level.

You can also make it out in this image

I'm fairly sure that that part of the scheme ends up as a drive-in entrance to the hotel(s). I reckon I've seen a render illustrating it in the past, but can't find one at the moment.

Besides, if it were to be glazed over, the L-section cross members are somewhat inelegant to be exposed to public view. I would expect better of Renzo Piano

Agreed, the grey steel is the temporary gantry to support the Alimak lift that will run up the outside during construction

Thanks for the links. Have you also found the original planning application for the Shard? couldn't find it on the website nor on the GIS map. Can someone help please?

I think this is it from March 2001: 01/AP/0476, though there are no documents online and the decision was called in to the Secretary of State.

Secretary's decision notice, November 2003 [PDF]

So will the viewing gallery be on several floors like a mezzanine?

i think so - haven't you you've seen the render of the viewing floors? I think it shows several internal viewing levels encased within the Shard's main outer envelope. the render is on this thread somewhere....

Off to Borough Market yesterday, but let's just detour around this interesting building site...

I've seen all the excellent photos, and I know this neck of the woods well enough, but nevertheless, I was blown away by the scale and ambition of this site. (Yes, I do appreciate that the finished building is going to be quite tall.) Has to be seen to be believed.

The view back up London Bridge Street from under the railway arch is going to be pretty special - already some visible steel.

the Monument is going to be a superb place to view the progress of the Shard - it's already visible above the roof tops
