I think it's because at long distances the base gets hidden by surrounding low rises, which creates the illusion that the building is short and fat.

Does the stair case go thro the whole building like this or only on curtain floors, because its real cool looking, nice and classy...

^I don't think it'd go through the whole building, maybe just for tenants who occupy more than one floor and wish to link them together? Who knows. But yeah, it looks very nice! Reminds me of the staircase enclosed by glass on Latitude World Square (aka Ernst & Young Tower) in Sydney:

These stairs are just on the New York Times Floors (2 through 22).

This building reminds me of the New York Times Tower and the Blommberg Tower in New York City..

I'm sure I'm not the first person to write this, but the NYTimes tower is hideous. Or are they planning on adding additional "flair" to make it a more attractive skyscraper?
