What grey stones do you mean? You mean the cladding?
If so,I don't think that is made of stone...
I don't like the cladding at all,it's too cold and isn't too inviting as you said. This building seems like a fortress in outer space

from this vantage point high a top 60 Wall Street you can see how much taller The Bank Of America tower will be than the NYT Tower

I think the NY Times and BoA Towers are much better than 'Freedom Tower' -mostly because they don't have a name as wanky as 'Freedom Tower'

If a building has just been completed, does its thread need to be closed?

This is usually the case when the scaffolding is lowered.

The spire is ridiculous, it isn't even architectually armonic. Reminds me of the Sears Tower antennas. So why does that thick pole at the top of the building count towards the final height?

Come on... NY Times Tower and BoA tower are filling New York's skyline with huge ugly "spires" instead of designing nice buildings as they once did.

in that picture, what exactly goes on in that huge brown windowless building to the far left. Telecommunications of some kind I would assume?

That's the AT&T Long Lines Building:

It's a telecommunications tower and includes offices. The urban legend is that it was built to withstand the impact of a nuclear bomb, it has no windows.

I love the exterior of this building. It's really in keeping with the newspaper/journalism feel.Thank goodness they didn't settle for generic and safe glass
