Come on... NY Times Tower and BoA tower are filling New York's skyline with huge ugly "spires" instead of designing nice buildings as they once did.
I remember reading about a shortage of short wave transmission antennae in New York and Chicago. Developers can make quite a lot of money renting these spires out to companies that need transmitters at heights only new skyscrapers can satisfy.
I personally just tend to ignore them. It's arguable that they artificially distort height rankings but when you look at many 'tallest lists' you notice quite a few buildings wouldn't be there if it weren't for their spires.

I'm actually really impressed with the new New York Times tower, I think the spire is analogous to the rest of the design. The metallic facade is also a refreshing break from purely glass curtain walls- makes it look more futuristic. Great addition to the NYC skyline.

I must say it looked better in the renders, but I still think the top is great.

A fine building, but not exceptional

I was in NY a couple a weeks ago and walked over to see this building up close ...it was very handsome and I think the photos here do not do it justice. It's very "new" looking, silvery and shining; the overall design and shape is rather conservative, it blends into the surrounding skyline (not necessarily a bad thing) ... but ... it it is not "edgy" and lacks what I call the "WOW" factor. Just my opinion, thats all.
