^ Maybe because it's commercial. It's built by a private company (Canary Wharf Group) for a private company (J.P. Morgan). Most of the other big projects over the last decade have been projects that involve the general public more. Think of the new Wembley, Heathrow Terminal 5, Millennium Dome/O2, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge, British Museum Great Court, Westfield, Channel Tunnel Rail Link/St Pancras, London Eye, 2012 Olympics, etc. They're all buildings/projects that Jo Public actually uses, and quite a few of them were government funded too. Furthermore, Riverside South is unrevolutionary in architectural terms, and also outside central London where big new buildings are most noticed. Even the Gherkin, which is also commercial and non-public, was more high profile because of its striking architecture, city centre location, and the controversies surrounding its planning permission. I think the Shard will attract more attention than Riverside South for these same reasons.

JPMorgan have confirmed that they will commence with the superstructure. They have submitted a planning application that would see a 4.5m height decrease to the middle building.

Worth noticing, the height of RS2 will decrease from 80.05 AOD (74.80 AGL) to 75.410 AOD (70.16 AGL) because of the omission of one trading floor resulting in a reduction of 12,838sqm. It will increase the soar factor of RS1 (height increase by 4 cm) and RS3.

In short: JPM has given its green light to proceed with the full construction of the super-structure. They have indicated to LBTH that they plan to occupy the three buildings (NB: they have fully bought Cazenove, previously a JV, which will be relocated to Canary Wharf Riverside South).

I was laughing because a 4 cm increase is not even noticeable.

Don't worry about increases. These ones are going to be huge beasts! Just look at the size of the site.

Apparently this render includes that increase from what he said.

A scheme by Clayduck.

  • A couple of diggers have taken a chunk out of the bottom of the ramp (The ramp is still pretty much there, but it doesn't look like they will be able to take the mobile crane down into the pit again)
  • They have started prepping a new basement segment in the NW part of the site against the riverside wall. Looks like it will also be 3m deep too (but starting from a higher base than the segments already poured)

I have tried (and probably failed) to update the progress on the site map - see below. The key to the diagram is:
  • White - basement segment already poured
  • Pink - basement segment prepped/soon to be poured
  • Blue - prop already installed
  • Red - approximate tower crane location
