[SLOVENIJA] - Smučišča/Ski Resorts

So, to give our Bosnian colleagues some competition, we're opening our own thread on Slovenian ski resorts.

Slovenian ski resorts are very small compared to their counterparts across the border in Austria and partly in Italy, too. For example, the biggest Slovenian ski resort, Mariborsko Pohorje, has 40 kilometres of pistes, while one of the bigger Austrian ski resorts, Sölden, has over 150 kilometres.

On the other hand, Slovenian ski resorts are cheaper, and are developing at a fast pace.

Here's a map of all ski resorts, members of the Slovenian Ropeway Operator Association (south is up):

Here's an introduction to the main Slovenian ski resorts:

Yeah, our ski resorts are small, and you can really see that although Slovenia has been developing a lot these 15 years, investments into our ski resorts were virtually none until a couple of years ago, the only exception being Cerkno, which is the most modern ski resort in Slovenia. However while two years ago it was the undoubtedly most modern, now and especially in a few years, that title will not be as self-evident.

What's new on Slovenian ski resorts in 2006/2007:

6 new lifts:

-Krvavec: detachable 6-seat chairlift
-Stari vrh: detachable 6-seat chairlift with leather and heated seats
-Kope: fixed 4-seat chairlift
-Mariborsko Pohorje: fixed 4-seat chairlift
-Ivarčko-Ošven: fixed 4-seat chairlift (after a couple of years not in operation, the fact that the ski resort was opened again was a big surprise, but that they're already building a new chairlift was stunning!)
-Soriška planina: 2-seat chairlift

So all in all:
2 detachable 6-seat chairlifts (one of them with heated seats!), 3 fixed 4-seat chairlifts and 1 (used, I might add) 2-seat chairlift.. Not bad.. Compared to last season, when there were only three new chairlifts installed at Slovenian ski resorts (1 2-seat and two 4-seat), it's not bad at all.

Just a little info about the amount of people visiting Slovenian ski resorts:

2005/2006:
1.835 million skiers, 9% more than 04/05

And finally, this is what is planned for 2007/2008 on Slovenian ski resorts:

10 new lifts

6-seat chairlifts at:
-Mariborsko Pohorje (part of the future connection with Ruše)
-Rogla

4-seat chairlifts at:
-Ribniško Pohorje (part of the future connection with Kope)
-Celjska koča
-Cerkno
-Vogel (two new chairlifts)
-Kranjska Gora

2-seat chairlifts at:
-Stari vrh

new tow at:
-Španov vrh

So 2 new 6-seat chairlifts, 5 new 4-seat chairlifts and 1 2-seat chairlift and 1 tow. Of course this is what is planned or expected, not necessarily what is going to be built, so we may have a couple more surprises or disappointments.

Much is new at Stari vrh
Small ski resort with big ambitions; 20% increase in skiers last year

Že v času praznikov so namreč začeli z obsežno investicijo v novo šestsedežnico, ki bo z ogrevanimi sedeži najbolj moderna v Sloveniji. Preostale investicije, ki so skupaj z novo sedežnico vredne prek milijarde tolarjev, prinašajo širše proge, več parkirišč, povečanje zmogljivosti dodatnega zasneževanja, regulacijo potoka zaradi dviga žičnice in ureditev dovozne ceste.

Oh dear, well, they're not installing any bubbles or special apoulstry. I'm not sure why not the apoulstry, but the bubbles would mean that at higher wind speeds the chairlift wouldn't be able to operate.

If you wanted apoulstry, bubbles and heated seats, though, go to Stari vrh!
