After staring at this for awhile, I finally figured out that the emblem on the tail is supposed to be a compass:

On the left side of the plane, the compass emblem points Northwest, which makes sense since that is the name of the airline. On the right side of the plane, it points Northeast, which makes no sense.

Wait, what? I see that they both point Northeast. Am I missing something?

I like the Northwest's liveries, specially for cargo version, look at them!!

The last one is special, because the KLM and Northwest logos, appear together.....

A couple of weeks ago, my flight from Detroit was delayed several hours, which gave me plenty of time to contemplate the airline's logo.

Left side - Northwest

Right side - Northeast

I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. I was actually taking pictures of the peoplemover. The tails of the airplanes just happened to be in the background.

I know that I am old fashioned, but I like the simple liveries that airlines used several decades ago. To me, the North Korean livery doesn't look so bad. To me, some of the newer liveries look silly. I especially dislike liveries that feature cartoon characters. Flying should be serious business! The following are some examples from the 1960s from www.airliners.net :

Pan Am

TWA

BOAC

Lufthansa

Swiss Air

United

Northwest Orient

Eastern

Western

Continental

Delta

American

American adopted its present livery in the late 1960s. It might be the oldest livery in use by a major airline:

American will probably have to change its livery when they start flying the new plastic airplanes built by Boeing.

For a few years, there was a low-cost airline in the United States called ValuJet. Their livery featured a cartoon airplane:

ValuJet suffered a widely publicized accident in which a fire started in the cargo compartment of an airliner and led to a spectacular crash in the Florida everglades. Following the accident, the company found that it had an image problem. The name ValuJet suggested to the public that the airline might be compromising safety in order to keep costs low and the cartoon character suggested that the company was not taking its business seriously. The company changed its name to AirTran and got rid of the cartoon airplane logo:

The 707 was such a great looking aircraft. It had the sleek look of speed.

Northwest Orient: Boeing 707

Western: Boeing 720
Continental: Boeing 707
Delta: Douglas DC-8
American: Convair 990
American: Boeing 707

The flag is 'backwards' too... so from that perspective it does point northwest

you have to save the .html link of the picture, then click the little picture of the mountain (when you mouseover it reads 'insert picture') and paste the location of the picture there

so this means the pictures need to be stored on another site

Yeah, Convair and Douglas are the same, single row long fueslage, & with long skinny turbojet engines. They just look sleek & speedy. The Convair had those transonic "thingies" (forgot the name) on top of the wing, too. There is a Convair on display at the Mojave Airport here in California.

Best:
Skybus. I was going to fly them back in Feb, but decided not to go to Ohio. Now I'm kind of mad that I didn't. For those of you not in the know, Skybus no longer exists.

Malaysia
I also like some of the more basic ones, like British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Air Canada, etc.

The worst is Southwest. It's amazing how dreadful it really is.

Yea, that could be and i hadn't thought about that. I wonder what they would do if they had to paint the actual body.
