Super Yachts to be built in Malaysia
11 Dec 2007 10:17 AM KUALA LUMPUR: Boustead Yachts (BY) Langkawi, Malaysia, a member of the Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation (BHIC) group of companies, has teamed up with Monaco Yachting Technologies (MYT) to build an initial two 74-metre Super Yachts. According to a statement issued via BAE Systems, which was instrumental in bringing the partners together, BY and MYT had signed a letter of intent (LoI) for the construction of the yachts as well as a collaboration agreement. Under the collaboration agreement, MYT will undertake international marketing activities to bring contracts to BY and develop and design yacht at BY’s Langkawi facility. According to the statement, the LoI contract was worth about RM450 million with further orders expected to follow. BY will begin a programme to expand its yard in Langkawi. There will also be a major expansion of the workforce and supply base in Langkawi, which will utilise traditional wood working skills through to leading edge design and build technologies. MYT chief executive officer Peter Landers said: “We are very excited about the prospect of working with BY and BAE to address this expanding shipbuilding sector.” “Having developed the project with Boustead’s management and based on Boustead’s available skill and asset base, we are certain that with BY acting as a prime contractor plus our own relationship with key subcontractors, we will be able to meet and even exceed international quality bench marks for this class of yacht,” he said. BHIC executive deputy chairman and managing director Datuk Seri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor said: “We see this LoI and collaboration agreement with MYT, supported by BAE, as an excellent growth opportunity for BY which will assist in driving the development of the maritime sector in Malaysia.” “The building of such super yachts is very close to the technologies used during construction by our group of the offshore patrol vessels for the Royal Malaysian Navy.” |
