You, of course, forgot Seoul's 640m tower and Ping An's tower whose height is still not known.

The lights on this tower remind me of those used on the Beijing TV Tower

Fantastic lighting! So, the light is slowly switch from one tone to another, I suppose.

Yes that would make sense as the Beijing TV Tower has a similar scheme that also changes colors.

that last pic is cool.

Why are they closing the holes of the spire?
I can only think of one reason: the wind rushing through those spire beams would make a lot of noise.

Yes, the spire looks so nice. About closing the spire, another reason could be because they want people to travel up there? ie, allowing people to get to a higher level other than the pod rides. A great idea i would think

Tower Gets Official Name

"Haixin Tower" (海心塔)

literally means "sea heart tower"..seems a little strange since it's by a river and not a sea..and the meaning and connotation arent even close to the criteria the city laid out when it started looking for name suggestions..

Then again Guangzhou was at one stage famous for being *the* port city for going overseas to South East Asia. So the name can be interpreted as Guangzhou = 出海之城, and this tower is at the center 中心 of this city. Hence 海心塔 is not such a bad name after all.

A name I would have came up with would be something like 峰南塔 (华南之峰).

Is it always obligatory to paint the spire white and red? That somehow ruins the tower.

It looks very good. A few years ago, there was a proposal for a similar 2000' tower with a hyperbolic parabola design for NY harbor but it was shot down. I think it looks great in Guangzhou! The red and white bands on the spire are for aviation.
