Yes, but Hong Kong is a special administrative region. Guangzhou is not a special administrative region, nor autonomous region - it is an ordinary subprovincial city in an ordinary province. Is Cantonese an official language in Guangdong Province?

Even this article mentioned that the tower is officially dubbed as "Canton Tower"

even a old name for the city, it makes this name for the tower so much more interesting.

Yup that's right. The romanization of the chinese name is just the difference in pronunciation between Cantonese and Mandarin. However, Canton is still the old name referred to by the West rite? So in this case, shouldn't Fujian/Xiamen still be called Amoy?

Well, I think in the old days foreign people mixed up Guangzhou city and Guangdong province. Out of Guangdong province, they made Canton city, which sound very close to Guangdong.

Even in Guangdonghua there is a big difference between Gongzau (city) and Gongdong (province).

I think Canton tower sounds quite nice. Guangzhou Tower doesn't sound as good. The name just doesn't fit as well.

As for city names, Guangdong is the name of the province, and Guangzhou City is the name of the city in Cantonese. Canton for Guangzhou is just like Peking for Beijing, they are no longer, and should no longer be used since they have official new names. We should though, remember that they existed and use these names for towers or symbolic landmarks like this beauty. Adds culture and pays respect to the history of the city. Australia used to be called New Holland, no one uses that name anymore..........

Wrong. Canton and Pengyu are the proper names in Cantonese (my father is native born Chinese and native speaker of Cantonese and calls his hometown Canton). Guangzhou was given to the name after the nationalization of Mandarin. More properly, Hong Kong is the Cantonese name for Hong Kong, whereas the Mandarin name is Xianggang.

I am not saying the English name is bad but the name in Cantonese is "广州塔" (gwong2 zau1 taap3) because "塔" (taap3) has the connotation "倒塔" (dou3 taap3) means collapse and the locals oppose the name "广州塔。"

The word "Canton" isn't even suppose to be "广州" (gwong2 zau1) the foreigner made the mistake it's "广东" (gwong2 dung1) the province name should be "Canton" (can ton) and "Canton/Kanton" is a German romanisation of the Portuguese romanisation of "Cantăo" that sound like "广东" in Cantonese

The main reason why "Canton" became "广州" its because "广州" can be translated as "'Capital of Guangdong"

WTH? do you or your father even know Cantonese? Neither Hongkong N Canton are Cantonese pronunciation. It's more like GwongZau and GwongDung.

And why are you people discussing name of the tower? I can careless as long as the tower looks great.
