The FedEX vehicle is not parked there today. And Flo by comparing the two pictures you can notice the difference in picture quality between the cameras on the N70 and N95.

Major contracts awarded on Downtown Jebel Ali

Japan's Taisei Corporation has secured a US $354 million (AED 1.3 billion) contract for four buildings - two residential and two commercial - which will be situated in the East Quarter of the development.

Piling work has been carried out by Bauer and the land is in the process of being handed over to Taisei.

The local Bin Hafeez recently secured the contract to carry out all infrastructure work for zones one and two (East Quarter and East Central) of the development.

"We had a kick-off meeting a few days ago and they have started construction," said Peter Bisley, development manager, Limitless.

All the grading works have been carried out.

Bisley added that the infrastructure contract for West Quarter and West Central will be awarded in the next 12 weeks, once the tendering documentation is complete.

No value was given for the contract, which will see work completed by the end of 2008/early 2009.

A road construction contract for Interchange 8 on Sheikh Zayed Road, which will service the East Quarter and provide essential transport links to the rest of Dubai, is currently out to tender with the RTA.

Bisley said this contract should be signed in the next four to six weeks. Designs for Interchange 9, which will serve East Quarter and East Central, are still being finalised by the RTA.

Downtown Jebel Ali, a mixed-use urban development, is being built at an estimated value of $13 billion.

It will be a two million m2 urban centre situated between Jebel Ali Free Zone, Techno Park and Dubai Waterfront.

The development will have extensive transport links between each of the four zones that comprise the project and Dubai Metro.

Master Plan of Jabel ali Town

Dubai: Limitless, a Dubai World company, on Wednesday announced the development of a Dh70 billion township, Downtown Jebel Ali, that will house 235,000 people.

The massive project, to be completed in phases by 2011, will occupy an 11 kilometre land stretch covering 200 hectares with built-up area of 70 million square feet on Shaikh Zayed Road between the Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai Waterfront and Techno-Park.

"It is designed to be the gateway to the World Central international airport in the area," a company statement said.

There will be a total of 326 buildings of which 237 will be residential and the rest commercial.

Limitless will invest Dh5 billion in infrastructure and also build 35 towers.

"Limitless is following a new strategic and sustainable approach to developing projects that will help create thriving diverse communities. This approach led to the creation of this distinctive development," Sultan Ahmad Bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World said in a statement.

The whole township is divided into four quarters, each divided into three districts that will have business, residential, dining and retail facilities.

"Downtown Jebel Ali will be more than a development, it will be a community where public spaces between the building — streets, parks and plazas — matters as much as the buildings themselves," Saeed Ahmad Saeed, CEO of Limitless said.

"The Downtown will reflect some of the world's most vibrant cities. This is going to be a pedestrian friendly area, four freeway interchanges connection to Downtown Jebel Ali. It will have an unrivalled transport infrastructure and a place where people will live and work without having to drive cars."

The project will be connected to Dubai with four Dubai Metro stations and an automated people mover system (APM) while there will also be pedestrianised congestion free areas, he said.

Limitless, a new company floated earlier this year by Dubai World, has also projects under way in Pakistan and China while other projects are being planned in India, Russia and the Gulf.

"Construction of the project is currently underway, with the first four commercial buildings due for completion by mid-2007."

The plazas launched in downtown Jebel Ali



Limitless has launched two plazas within its flagship Downtown Jebel Ali project.

The Plazas at Downtown Jebel Ali will be the focus of the 200-hectare urban community, currently under construction along Sheikh Zayed Road.

Downtown Jebel Ali is a mixed-use urban community. It will consist of four zones and will stretch for 11 kilometres along Sheikh Zayed Road. Located between the Jebel Ali Free Zone and Techno Park, it will have 326 buildings, 237 of which will be part of residential communities. Designed to allow space between buildings, it will feature pedestrian and congestion-free areas. Each zone will have three individual districts: The Urban Centre, The Trellis and The Medina, creating a blend of business, residential, shopping, dining and entertainment facilities.
Created by Raphael Vinoly Architects and Pelli Clark Pelli Architects, the Plazas will be the transport, entertainment and retail hubs of Downtown Jebel Ali. Each project will have its own Dubai Metro station, convenient road access and a pick-up and drop-off point for the development's internal transport system. The Plazas will be a regional venue for shopping and leisure, with a multipurpose outdoor arena for concerts, cultural and sporting events, as well as restaurants and cafés. Residential and office accommodation will also be included.

The buildings will also have LEED accreditation to ensure that they meet the international environmental standards, including water recycling systems and energy-efficient glass.

Work on The Plazas will begin in 2008, and will be completed by 2011.

I saw somewhere, but don't remember where, a diagram showing the "extent" of this development. Despite being called "downtown" which would lead one to image a rather broad swathe of developed land, it actually consists only of strips or narrow bands along SZR. The North, South, East, West districts are each narrow bands that line the highway.

Can anyone else confirm this?
