Yeah, that's right.
He probably mixed up Guangzhou with Shenzhen.

I was in Guangzhou in the early 80's and there was one hotel tower and it was on all the postcards of the city. There was a huge city there, but no, and I mean no, skyline to speak of. The airport was one tiny building and you walked out to your CAAC old Russian plane.

As for Shenzhen...when you left HK and entered the PRC back in those days, there was nothing there. Shenzhen is the most changed place on the planet over the past quarter century. It is beyond mind blowing what happened there.

I think about this every time I look at it.

It looks like an awesome post modern version of the United Nations Building.

That must be the White Swan Hotel, which sits on the waterfront and will soon close for renovations.

Wow. Which cities in China will have the most supertalls in 2015, z0rg? I feel there are so many U/C in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and even Shenyang already, more than Shanghai could ever dream of. Will Shanghai lose its top spot?

No, Shanghai has boasted more buildings above 400 m than any other city in the world (except Chicago).

For now it is (supertall-wise 300m). My money is on Guangzhou or Shenzhen will have the most by 2015.
