I'd have to say yes.
New Zealand has witnessed plenty of crimes that are horrible enough to warrant the death penalty. We are not all created equal, there is scum out there. Last edited by NZer; November 20th, 2006 at 02:29 PM. |

The obvious one is murder.
How many times do we have see/hear about some reknaw who kills an everyday, law abiding, tax paying, average, normal Joe / Josephine Bloggs NZer? The death penalty is required for these kind of space wasters, who never try to be good citizens. The kind of people who with one ill-judged action or more likely a deliberate choice, take the only thing that matters in this mortal world - Life! And to top it off they are looked after by the touchy feelies. You know the usual excuse...he/she was harmed/abused when they were growing up etc. Deep down we all know right from wrong, even the murdering space wasters. PS: Rant over - no offence meant to any touchy feelies!

Hi
Don't want to get into too heavy a debate. My earlier post is my personal opinion. We all know that we will never have the death penalty reintroduced to NZ. And as spotila said, the death penalty reserved for only the most henious of crimes. There are degrees in everything. The example of the father killing the murderer of one of his children, in my opinion would not rank in the first degree of murder, unlike for example the murder a few years ago in Auckland of a Pizza shop worker who did as instructed, handed over the $ and was still killed in cold callous blood by a complete stranger. The robber had the money and didn't need to kill at all, but still went ahead and shot the poor guy in the back of the head. There is no comparison between the two examples.

No I don't want an agro debate either, it's just interesting to get views out and about.
For me it's about when would the killing circle stop if we had the death penalty? |

I said yes, for certain heinous crimes such as the one Dazzle mentioned. I also think that life imprisonment should mean life, not 14 years as we have now.
We're beginning to see a generation of youths that know they can commit any degree of crime and receive little in the way of punishment (if they are even caught). I think that the PC approach to corrections can only last so long. |

No.
Personally I cannot see how State mandated homicide(death penalty) is any better than individual criminal homicide. Take a look at David's map above and what is the one thing all the orange countries share in common? The 18th century enlightenment movement either never reached their shores or is rapid retreat. Capital punishment is the reactionary sledge hammer approach to fixing things, we are better than that. If you want an example of such an approach, you need to look no further than the actions of one G.W. Bush! |

YES, YES, YES (for murder) ......
Although Auckland's murder rate is no-where near that of other major cities, it needs to be curbed now and I for one have always supported the death sentence. One needs to earn respect and I don't see why the tax-payer should support vermin. I have had first hand experience of living in a country with a high murder rate and trust me when I say that NZ doesn't want to go down that road. I would also like to add that it still amazes me how quickly the police catch these oxygen thieves - well done NZ Police. Another thing - why is it that 95% of the serious crimes are either committed by Maori or Pacific Islanders ? I can't understand it. |

Its probably because the authorities include P in the water supply to Otara and Fluride to the white suburbs.
