COPENHAGEN | Tivoli Hotel | 103m | Pro

From Foster + Partners

16/11/2006
Design unveiled for the Tivoli Four Seasons Hotel in Copenhagen

Foster + Partners has won an international competition to design the first Four Seasons Hotel in Scandinavia set within Copenhagen뭩 historic Tivoli Gardens. The project is a luxury, sustainable development of hotel accommodation and condominiums, providing a new landmark for the city while forging a dialogue with the celebrated 19-century amusement park and gardens. A contemporary architectural intervention on an historic site, it represents a fine balance between celebrating the strengths and culture of Copenhagen뭩 distinctive urban grain, while creating a new building that has presence and integrity.

Driven by a careful urban strategy concerned with the preservation of Copenhagen뭩 low skyline, the scheme comprises an elegant cluster of interconnecting cylinders that combine to form a generous podium corresponding to the heights of the surrounding rooflines. Elegantly rising from the podium, a slender sculptural tower acts as a marker for the scheme and relates in scale to the City Hall tower opposite, adding to the language of spires in Copenhagen. The landscaped roofs of the lower buildings extend the greenery of Tivoli and reinforce the building뭩 sustainable profile. In addition to allowing for rainwater collection, the buildings are oriented to maximise natural light and views while reducing unwanted solar gain in the summer, but capturing the sun뭩 rays in the cooler winter months.

The hotel will offer an unprecedented level of luxury every guest room will benefit from fine views over Tivoli Gardens. The hotel will also benefit from a state-of-the-art spa and fitness centre, which, combined with its bold architectural form, will create a sense of destination and place. At ground level, the podium is permeable and accessible, blending with the spirit of Tivoli Gardens to extend this unique leisure realm at the heart of the city.

Lord Foster said: 밫he Tivoli Gardens Hotel project requires delicacy of scale and sensitivity to Copenhagen뭩 rich design heritage, combined with a bold vision for a new design that has integrity and presence. This is a challenge that we, as architects, welcome. I look forward to working with Tivoli and the city on the project뭩 successful realisation."

Very nice for Copenhagen! This city needs highrises. Put it in a cluster somewhere in between the centre and the suburbs.

Sir Norman Foster is my favorite architect (my avatar gave it away?).
This is great news for Copenhagen, where anything that alters the low-rise character of the city better be damn good.
Four Seasons is really on an extraordinary building boom doing only top notch projects.

Agree with Danishguy.
This tower would look great among other modern buildings, but I don't think it fits very well with the older builing at the left of the pic.

As you can imagine a big debate have already started in Copenhagen about this new project, and NIMBYs have already started to protest against it.

As the NIMBYs as usualy try to gather people from all over the world to support their petitions, I ask my fellow high rise-friends from abroad to give us their support in the big NIMBY-battle that is on the way.

If you also the the Tivoli hotel tower will be a nice addition to the Copenhagen city center, then sign in here:
