All are wooing the stand alone theatres in Tier I, II, III & IV cities / towns since most of them will be in the CBD / main streets. Demolish them and make 2 or 3 smaller theatres with a food court and a small shopping area. Throw a children's Play area also, if there is enough space.

This concept is called Family Entertainment Centres. This is the JV route.

There are other models wherein the existing theatres are spruced up with modern looking seats, DTS audio etc and rights of exhibition is leased for a long period. Fixed sum is given to the owner and the balance goes to the company.

SIMA plans captive power plant

Link to news...

Quote:
Chennai Feb. 6 The Southern India Mills' Association (SIMA) plans to set up a 500-MW captive power plant at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. The coal-based plant is likely to cost Rs 2,400 crore.

The association representatives are likely to meet State Government officials on Wednesday to seek land allotment for the power plant and for a jetty to handle coal imports.

Mr Manikam Ramaswami, former chairman, SIMA, told newspersons that the association would set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the power plant. SIMA would hold 51 per cent in the SPV and other investors, including IL&FS, have shown interest in the project.

He said power could be supplied to SIMA members at Rs 2.40 per kWh, which is much lower than the existing rate of Rs 4.20 per kWh.

High cost of power

Mr S.V. Arumugam, Chairman, SIMA, said the association came up with this proposal because of the high cost of power in the State. The power cost in the neighbouring States is lower, he said. In Andhra Pradesh, for instance, it was only Rs 3.11 per kWh and for expansion and new units it is only Rs 2.35 per kWh.
Mr Ramaswami said many textile units were leaving Tamil Nadu because of its high power cost.

Annual loss

He said last year SIMA members had projected an annual loss of Rs 800 crore owing to power tripping in the textile mills.

He said the power tripping was not uniform across the circles or within the same circle.

Mr Arumugam said SIMA is willing to request members who have furnace oil based power generating sets to start using them to full capacity.

It would become economical if the Government waives notional income from idle sets — power generation tax, sales tax on fuel oil, waiver of maximum demand charges to the extent of maximum demand not availed of.

Why IT firms are turning to tier-II TN cities

Tier-two cities in Tamil Nadu are fast emerging as new IT destinations, with a number of projects aimed at attracting IT investment nearing completion in cities like Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy.

Initiatives have already been taken up to set up an information technology park in Coimbatore on the lines of Chennai's Tidal Park. Similarly, the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu is setting up two IT parks in Madurai and Trichy, which are expected to get the status of special economic zones.

In Trichy, about 135 acres of government land had been transferred to Elcot for the purpose of establishing IT parks. Sources in Elcot told Business Standard that the corporation had acquired 135.04 acres at Navalpattu on the outskirts of the city, where it would set up an IT park soon.

The corporation has submitted a proposal to the government to declare the park as a special economic zone for IT and IT-enabled services. Elcot plans to construct a built-up area of about one million square feet.

Navalpattu, situated on the Trichy-Pudukkottai highway, was chosen for the project considering its proximity to the Trichy International Airport. Elcot is looking at the possibility of acquiring more land near the site for future expansion.

With the completion of the ongoing expansion and modernisation of the airport and the upgradation of Trichy-Pudukkottai highway, the officials expect that the park will be able to attract huge investments.

Moreover, the rich talent pool in the city, which churns out not less than 10,000 graduates in the software and hardware sectors every year, is also expected to attract big firms.

Meanwhile, Elcot has also completed the acquisition of land in Madurai to set up another IT park. Sources said that the state government had already transferred 8.81 hectares of land in Ilandhaikulam near Pondikudi and 16.02 hectares at Kinnimangalam near the Madurai Kamaraj University, to the corporation.

Elcot sources said that a plug-and-play facility, similar to the one at the Tidal Park, would also be created in the proposed IT Park at Madurai, the construction of which will begin soon. They claimed that 50 per cent of the booking for space in the park was already over.

The Trichy City Corporation is also making all efforts to utilise the Centre's Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns as well as the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme. Under the UIDS programme, the Centre would provide 80 per cent of the project cost as grants, while the state and city corporations would contribute 10 per cent each.

NPCIL to invest $23b for capacity expansion

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...ow/1601228.cms

NPCIL has started pre-project activities for two additional fast-breeder reactors at Kalpakkam. These are part of the expansion proposal submitted to the government. NPCIL has already initiated the process of setting up one fast-breeder reactor, scheduled to go critical by March 2011.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
“Such breeder reactors also require a processing unit for fissile materials that are produced. One such processing unit can handle fuels for four reactors. The decision to set up two additional reactors at Kalpakkam has been taken since NPCIL is installing a processing unit there that can handle four reactors,” said NPCIL's senior executive director safety, Mr SS Bajaj.

Finally, the proposal includes plans to set up 10 large capacity reactors of 1,000 MW each. “These are likely to be built with imported technology, and four each will be set up at Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. The location of the remaining two are yet to be decided,” he said.

“The remaining two will come up at any of the four new sites that the Site Selection Committee is considering. These include sites in West Bengal, Gujarat, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh,” Mr Thakur said.

Tanflora infra park to export 1 m cut roses

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...ow/1566389.cms

TANFLORA Infrastructure Park, a joint venture between stateowned Tidco and MN Associates for floriculture, is trying to make a mark this Valentine's day season by exporting one million cut roses. It expects to end the fiscal 2006-07 with export of three million units.

About 25 growers have been allocated two hectares of land, each in the park, to grow cut roses under a co-operative farming initiative, with guidance and support from Tanflora.

"For the first time, Tanflora will be crossing the one million mark in cut roses export during the Valentine's Day season. While we hope to end this fiscal with export of three million units, this will increase to 45 million next year and to 70 million by 08-09 , when all the allocated land is put into full use," Mr Najeeb Ahmed, managing director , Tanflora Infrastructure Park, told visiting journalists from Chennai.

Of the total projected area of 230 acres, the 25 growers together have established green houses in around 135 acres in the park, which also boasts of an 80,000 sqft "insulated central facility" , including 19,000 sqft of cold storage.

Tanflora, the country's first agri export zone (AEZ), is also the world's fourth largest floriculture park, next only to the three larger parks in Kenya. Of the total project cost of Rs 24.85 crore, equity capital is Rs 5.82 crore and Tidco and MN Associates hold equal share.

It is supported by Apeda, National Horticulture Board (NHB) and SBI. "The farmers and Tanflora share the revenues accrued on a 75%:25% basis respectively," Mr Ahmed said. Tanflora has established overseas marketing offices in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Sydney and Dubai. "The target markets for Tanflora are Europe, Japan, South-East Asia, Australia, Middle East, Russia and CIS Countries , which is a new market," Mr Ahmed said.

With regular export of cut flowers now on the anvil, Tanflora is keen to offer value-added services including bouquets. "We intend to make complete bouquets with bar-codes for supermarket chains in Europe. This is likely to start over the next six to eight months," Mr Ahmed said.

Telephone Cables are under the ground in Salem. And Salem will be the second city in TN to get the power cables to go under the ground. The UHD works and underground power line works will be taken simultaneously soon.
