Middlesbrough Area - Developments
Middlesbrough / Tees valley Developments
![]() Endeavour House: Student Flats, Apartments Elevation: 114m Developer: Mandale Status: Outline Approval, Site clearance complete. ![]() Mandale Student Residence (Borough Road) Recently Completed 11 floor block: ![]() Middlehaven redevelopment: Huge scale redevelopment of the Middlehaven wasteland, between the town centre and the Riverside football stadium. Ambitious plans announced in July 2004 included a vast £200m masterplan by Will Allsop. After 2 years of delays, Tees Valley Regeneration have signed a deal with Quintain Estates, which it is hoped will lead to construction starting in 2007. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The original Will Allsop plans appear to been restrained. The coloured landscaping (which was supposed to be a real effect produced through different coloured plants) doesn't feature. The Building designs are more conservative by the looks of things – there are no indications of giant toasters or kerplunk towers anymore. The ‘sugar cube’ office blocks lining the side of the area were one of the most workable and popular features of Allsops’ plans. They appear to be retained in concept, albeit with more restrained designs again. New plans: ![]() Old: ![]() Old ‘sugar cubes’ ![]() The rest of Allsops ideas: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() College (U/C) The college element of the Middlehaven masterplan is already under construction. The £68m development will be open in 2008. The rendering below shows the new building as seen on the other recent middlehaven renderings, and includes the three waterfront towers and sugar cube office blocks: ![]() ![]() Stockton: North Shore: ![]() There will soon be a new face in Stockton. A new face with a fantastic waterfront position, great views and amenities and prime office accommodation. The 56 acre scheme, which will also include a range of residential housing, cafes, bars, restaurants and leisure facilities, follows a modern, fresh design which will provide an innovative and successful urban development. It will also boast an iconic footbridge linking North Shore with Teesdale, encouraging movement between sites and facilitating the expansion of the University of Durham’s Stockton campus. Significant public investment has already prepared the site for development and enabled the provision of an excellent road system and infrastructure. In addition the scheme will create more than 2500 jobs. The scheme will be delivered in four stages over approximately eight years with phase one expected to begin in 2007. As the scheme progresses it is anticipated that it will also house a new student residential college and conference facility along with a hotel and a shoreline promenade designed to encourage the public to use and enjoy this new asset for the town. Mandale Student residence: Rumors of another huge block of student apartments by Mandale, in addition to the one in Middlesbrough itself. This time, the development will include 500 units, although the exact location within Stockton is unknown. New Tees footbridge: ![]() Designs for a landmark footbridge to span the River Tees at Stockton’s up-and-coming North Shore development have been granted planning permission. The eye-catching bridge will carry both pedestrians and cyclists. Joe Docherty, chief executive of Tees Valley Regeneration, said: “The bridge will be an iconic structure forming a focal point within North Shore, yet it will also be functional and simple to maintain. “The bridge will form a strategic element of the footpath and cycle network in the area which forms part of the Teesdale Way. It is a fundamental part of the site’s infrastructure and we hope it will enable the University of Durham to expand the Queen’s Campus onto North Shore.

May be some useful info about the Stockton aspects in Durham University's masterplan document. It mostly centres on Durham City but I believe stockton was widely featured too.
http://www.dur.ac.uk/estates/documents/ Also reminds me to get my bloody Durham thread up and running! Liking the Alsop plan a lot too! big improvement on the original Last edited by Prestonian; November 25th, 2006 at 09:25 PM. |

I think that these projects are fantastic, especially that one around the docks, its really qwerky, i love it. I have family in redcar and often go past middlesbrough and look on in horror but these projects will absolutely bring middlesbrough forward.

The MIMA art gallery has opened, along with a large new public space behind the town hall. It looks very impressive, and has certainly created a new buzz in the area. The site for Endeavor house has been cleared, and work is well underway on the college campus at middlehaven.

Love the Alsop Masterplan, that should really boost the area and despite being made more conservative it will certainly acheive one of the most innovative waterfronts in the country..

It looks like after discussions Middlesbrough Council have kicked the Endeavour House proposal into touch as the developers are now resubmitting new plans for the site. The new proposals are for what appears to be two towers ,the larger one rising to 18 stories high instead of the old one of 27 .
The new design looks far better than the East European lookalike social housing block they wanted to put up. Here is a link to some images of it They are also submitting plans for a six story building over the road on the old Cleveland Scientific Institution site. http://www.england-lyle.co.uk/pdf/jj_images.pdf Some good looking developments in the Midddlesbrough area, with the exception of Endeavour House of course. I'm glad it's being reworked.

Is this the replacement for Endeavour House?
![]() It's certainly a big improvement, although I thought the original brightly coloured Endeavour House design might brighten Middlesborough up a bit. The colours on it certainly didn't look out of place with Alsop's wacky but colourful designs. I still needed pursuading on the original claimed height of 114m; even at a generous 3m per floor, that only came out at 81m.

I love the New Tees Footbridge. Looks really funky but it's a really simple design at the same time.

Plans for two of the first nine Alsop Cube buildings at the Middlehaven Dock development have just been submitted to Middlesbrough Councils Planning Dept.
They consist of two nine storey residential blocks .If approved they hope to start work later this year. |

That means The Plaza development in Leeds can take its place as the tallest student skyscraper in the UK at 103m. This proposal would have surpassed it to take the title. Thanks Middlesborough!! |

And yes the new endeavour house design is an improvement, although it's still poor IMO. I don't like that huge sloping roof over the main tower.
