I saw the Emerson College when I was in LA over the summer. I can say I was quite impressed when I saw it.

City Wants 4,000 New Hotel Rooms Around LA Live

image hosted on flickr

LA Live complex by CallumParry, on Flickr

Quote:
Los Angeles tourism is way up, setting new records both in the number of people visiting the city (42.2 million in 2013) and in the number of hotel rooms they occupied while they were here. With numbers like that, it's probably smart that the city wants to get 5,000 new hotel rooms (pdf) built by 2020—4,000 of them in the "Sports and Entertainment District" around LA Live (4,000 rooms is roughly equivalent to nearly four and a half Wilshire Grands.) The rooms are sorely needed in the area, apparently; LA Convention Center manager Bud Ovrom says the JW Marriott is "is running 95% occupancy, with a lot of days turning away business." The horror. A recent meeting of hotel developers attended by, among others, LA's Chief Administrative Officer Miguel Santana (he's identified as "Michael" in the article) outlined what the city is willing to do to get those new hotel rooms up and running. They've offered "up to 50% of the property specific revenues from transient occupancy taxes, sales takes, property taxes and the like."

Design for the new version of Metropolis was revealed today. The first phase has just broken ground.

Ditto to that "WOW!" Certainly better than expected and MUCH better than any of the conceptual renders we've seen. Thank God they didn't go with the zany mismatched approach that got floated a few months ago. I hope the warm, brownish-copper tones are actually intentional and not just the lighting as imagined by the renderer.

DTLA, closing that gap!

I hope they took the opportunity to shoot a movie about green spiders attacking downtown LA.

Millennial-Friendly Community Set to Hit South Park in 2024

Quote:
South Park's got megaproject Metropolis and mixed-users aplenty in the works right now, and then there's developer Mack Urban's six-acre planned community at Pico and Grand, which is supposed to have all the "all the bells and whistles" that millennials adore. Now we're starting to learn exactly what those bells and whistles will be: The $750-million project will comprise four towers designed by LA firm AC Martin—three residential (both rental and much-needed condos), and one hotel—on adjacent sites.

The hotel and one apartment/condo tower would be bordered by Grand, Olive, and Twelfth Street, while the other two towers would be on a site marked off by Pico, Olive, and Hill Street.

The new development is also seeking to "put the park back in South Park," as one Mack Urban official put it, by adding several green spaces around the towers, designed to be inviting to pedestrians. It's the first Downtown development to give so much attention to generating urban greenery. If there aren't any setbacks with approvals, phase one of the project could break ground by the end of the year and the last phase should be finished by 2024.
